How to sew a shopping cart handle cover in 15 minutes or less

Let’s face it – grocery store carts can be dirty and kids often touch everything then have their hands in their mouth. A quick and easy solution is to whip up a shopping cart handle cover from fabric scraps and hook & loop tape. You can wash them after each use – if you throw them in your washing machine just remember to connect the hook and loop so it doesn’t stick to your clothes!

These are great for baby shower gifts or new baby gifts. These are also easy and useful items to sew and sell. Whoever heads to the grocery store can just put them in a purse or diaper bag and attach them to the shopping cart handle as needed. Some people even use them for themselves – no child required. 😉

Thomas and Friends™ Full Steam Ahead 10" precut stacker from Riley Blake Designs

I used fabric from the Thomas & Friends™ Full Steam Ahead 10″ stacker from Riley Blake Designs and pieced the prints together to make handle covers kids will love. I used a solid fabric for the back since that won’t show. This project is a great way to use up fabric scraps you have in your home.

After testing both 15″ x 5½” & 6½” my favorite size is 15″ x 5½”. You will need (2) pieces that size whether you use on piece or put fabric scraps together. Then grab 13″ of hook and loop tape and you’re on your way.

As you can see in the examples above I use 2 – 3 Thomas & Friends™ fabrics for each shopping cart handle cover, depending on the size scraps I had left over from other projects.

Make them from a fabric that will be fun for the child, fabric scraps you have waiting for a project or something you’d like to look at if they are for you. The possibilities are endless. These are quick, easy and unique items any mom or caregiver will use.
