Dance into Creativity with the Ballet Slipper Pouch

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.

Sometimes the smallest sewing projects become our favorites. They come together quickly, teach new skills, and create something beautiful that can be enjoyed every day.

The Ballet Slipper Pouch is one of those projects. Designed using my Nutcracker Tradition fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs, this charming zipper pouch is inspired by a classic ballet slipper and is both playful and practical.

A Pouch That Looks Like a Ballet Slipper

Finished at approximately 4″ × 9″ × 3½”, the Ballet Slipper Pouch is the perfect size for storing sewing notions, makeup, pencils, small toys, embroidery supplies, or other everyday treasures.

What makes this project so special is its realistic ballet slipper shape. The curved toe, decorative ribbon ties, and zipper closure come together to create a pouch that feels both elegant and fun.

Inspired by Nutcracker Tradition

The sample is sewn using fabrics from the Nutcracker Tradition collection, combining festive florals and playful holiday prints that give the pouch a timeless Christmas feel.

The curved appliqué detail across the top of the slipper creates a beautiful opportunity to feature a favorite print, while the coordinating fabrics bring depth and contrast to the finished project.

Three Tips for Sewing the Ballet Slipper Pouch

1. Take Your Time Around the Curves

The ballet slipper shape includes several curved seams. Sewing slowly and clipping the seam allowances after stitching will help everything turn smoothly and create a beautifully shaped pouch.

2. Press Throughout the Project

Pressing after each step helps the slipper hold its elegant shape. Crisp seams also make topstitching and zipper installation much easier.

3. Add Your Own Special Touches

The pattern includes optional embellishment ideas like hand embroidery or Sparkle Paste, allowing you to personalize your pouch and make it uniquely yours. You can even add the optional Clara charm to the zipper pull for an extra festive detail.

A Handmade Gift They’ll Treasure

The Ballet Slipper Pouch is a wonderful project for gift giving. Fill it with sewing notions, treats, gift cards, or little surprises, and it becomes a thoughtful handmade present that can be enjoyed long after the holidays are over.

It is also a lovely project to sew for dancers, teachers, grandchildren, or anyone who appreciates beautiful handmade accessories.

Sometimes the sweetest sewing projects come in the smallest packages, and the Ballet Slipper Pouch is a perfect reminder that creativity can be both beautiful and practical.
