Radiant Ruby – Lumi Quilt

A Classic Red and White Lumi Quilt with Radiant Ruby

Hi, Tamara here from Remi Vail Studio. There is something so timeless about a red and white quilt. The palette feels familiar and grounded, yet always fresh. For this version of my Lumi Quilt pattern, I leaned into that tradition using the Radiant Ruby fabric collection designed by Dani Mogstad for Riley Blake Designs.

Radiant Ruby is full of cheerful reds paired with crisp whites, making it a beautiful choice for quilts that rely on strong contrast. The collection includes a thoughtful mix of playful prints and subtle basics, which allowed Lumi Quilt’s snowflake design to shine while still adding depth and visual interest throughout the quilt.

The Radiant Ruby Fabric Collection

For this quilt, I pulled a variety of prints from the Radiant Ruby Collection to give each section of the snowflake its own personality while keeping the overall look cohesive and classic.

Fabrics from the collection used in the quilt top include:

  • Schoolhouse Moroccan
  • Cloud Leaves
  • Schoolhouse Herringbone
  • Schoolhouse Stripe
  • Schoolhouse Leaves
  • Schoolhouse Dots
  • Cloud Stripe
  • Schoolhouse Red Tina Bee Gingham

The background fabric is Cloud Dots, which provides a soft foundation without overpowering the red prints. For the backing, I chose Red Swiss Dot on White, continuing the red and white theme all the way through the quilt.

I adore how this collection worked for the quilt. Using the same red throughout felt important to me, but I also wanted it to feel layered and interesting. The subtle variation in scale and pattern across the Radiant Ruby prints adds visual depth while keeping the quilt cohesive, which can be tricky to achieve with a two color palette.

About the Lumi Quilt Pattern

Lumi Quilt is designed by me – Tamara Darragh for Remi Vail Studio.

Lumi is the Finnish word for snow, a quiet nod to the Nordic roots woven into life here in Minnesota. Winter has always felt magical to me. The way the first snowfall softens the world, everything grows still, and the earth settles under a calm white blanket. That sense of quiet beauty is what inspired the Lumi Quilt.

The Lumi Quilt is a medallion style design built around a large snowflake, with each branch forming as you sew. One of my favorite parts of this pattern is how the design slowly reveals itself as the quilt comes together. It feels crisp and structured, yet soft and comforting, much like stepping outside on a clear winter morning before the world has been touched.

The pattern is written in one generous size, though borders can easily be added if you would like to make it larger. Lumi is confident beginner friendly and uses straightforward quilting techniques including strip piecing, half square triangles, and snowball corners.

I recently made this quilt in the Winter Magic fabric collection as well. You can read that blog here.

Flange Binding as a Finishing Detail

To finish this quilt, I used a flange binding, which adds a tiny framed edge and works beautifully with bold quilts like this one.

The main binding fabric is Schoolhouse Red Tina Bee Gingham, cut on the bias to create a little more visual interest with the gingham. The flange is the Schoolhouse Confetti Cotton solid.

Flange binding is one of my favorite finishing techniques. It adds a polished look while still keeping the focus on the piecing and fabric. If you’d like to try this technique, you can find a step-by-step tutorial on my website by clicking the button below.

Quilting and Thread Choices

I longarmed this quilt using a Juki Miyabi J-350QVP. For the quilting design, I chose the Swirly Snowflakes pantograph by Sew Shabby Quilting. The gentle curves echo falling snow and add movement without competing with the snowflake design.

For thread, I used Aurifil 40/3 weight in color 2024 white. The slightly heavier weight adds texture and definition while blending softly into the background.

A Modern Quilt with Heritage Roots

Red and white quilts have a long history in quilting, traditionally made to showcase bold piecing and graphic layouts. This version of Lumi honors that heritage while bringing a modern quilting perspective through fabric selection, layout, and finishing details.

Radiant Ruby brought this quilt to life in a way that feels joyful, classic, and inviting. It is always special to see how a fabric collection and a pattern come together to tell a story.
