TYPE/ography – Tactfully Twisted Quilt

When I first saw the new TYPE/ography collection by Lori Holt, filled with vintage typeface charm, it immediately spoke to my stationery and typography loving heart. I knew my next pattern simply had to lean into its personality. So meet Tactfully Twisted, my new quilt pattern coming before the end of the year. But before I show you the playful spin on a classic block, let’s take a look at the fabric that sparked it all.

A Love Letter to TYPE/ography

Lori Holt’s new TYPE/ography line is a visual celebration of nostalgia and timeless colors. The collection includes 30 colored fabrics plus 12 beautifully balanced low-volumes, a palette that feels both classic and grounded.

Each print has that vintage typography feel: letters, glyphs, typewriter keys, and classic design motifs reimagined in Lori’s signature style. Think charming serif fonts in cherry red and mint green, or dainty letterforms scattered across creamy backgrounds. It’s a line that whispers nostalgia while keeping one foot firmly planted in the modern day.

Hey there, Kelly Renay here, before I dive into my new pattern, I want to share a little backstory that makes this quilt especially meaningful to me.

Inspiration Passed Down

When I was growing up, one of my favorite quilts was an old, well-loved treasure that laid at the foot of my parents’ bed. It was made by my great-great-grandmother, pieced in soft, timeworn colors, and built from blocks known as the Capital T.

Over the years, that quilt became so worn from all its love. The seams had softened, the colors had faded, but the design still had a charm that I knew one day I wanted to remake one of my own. I think that’s what I love most about quilting, the way one block, passed down through generations, can inspire something entirely new while keeping its roots intact.

Why Tactfully Twisted?

That old Capital T Block was my starting point. Tactfully Twisted is my modern nod to it, a pattern that keeps the soul of the classic block but gives it a clever spin.
Here’s what makes it special:

  • Fat-quarter friendly – Perfect for those TYPE/ography bundles you’ve been eyeing.
  • Beginner friendly – Straightforward piecing with a little layout magic to create that signature twist.
  • A modern remix of a classic block – Also known as the “Square T,” “Double T,” or “Four T’s,” this block gets a fresh, angled layout that brings new movement and personality to a timeless favorite.
  • Design flexibility – Mix bold colors, subtle low-volumes, or go for a two-tone look, and then let the twist do all the talking.

The result? A quilt that feels modern and graphic, yet rooted in the comforting familiarity of tradition.

Making the Twist Work for You

If you decide to make your own Tactfully Twisted quilt with TYPE/ography, here are a few tips:

  • Use those low-volume prints as background or negative space to balance your “T” blocks.
  • Play with contrast – high-impact pairings will make each “T” pop.
  • Don’t stress perfection. The “twist” gives you room to embrace playful imperfection (and let’s be honest, that’s half the fun).

Coming Soon!

I’m in the final testing stages now, and Tactfully Twisted will be releasing before the end of the year! I can’t wait to see what you’ll make with it… and perhaps, as you sew, you’ll be reminded of the little stories your own quilts hold.
