A Modern Handcraft Snowflake Quilt with the Winter Magic Collection
There’s something so joyful about snowflakes – each one unique, each one bringing a little bit of winter wonder wherever it lands. So when I saw Dani Mogstad’s Winter Magic collection for Riley Blake Designs, I knew immediately what it needed to become: a Modern Handcraft Snowflake Quilt.
This pattern has long been on my to-make list. I love its crisp, graphic design. The simple squares and half square triangles come together to form one giant, striking snowflake. It’s bold, modern and just the right balance of festive and fresh.

About the Fabric
Dani Mogstad’s Winter Magic is a frosty fairytale come to life. The palette is a mix of icy blues, snowy whites, and just the right touch of Tea Dye (a sandy colour which brings a lovely contrast).
I wanted the snowflake to really pop, so I used the darkest prints for the background. For the snowflake itself, I chose the White Swirls print from the collection, leaning into the wintry contrast.
The Pattern
Modern Handcraft’s Snowflake Quilt is a confident beginner-friendly pattern that’s a joy to piece. It’s made entirely from squares and half square triangles, so there’s no tricky piecing, just lots of chain piecing and satisfying blocks coming together.
One thing I especially love about this pattern is how versatile it is with fabric collections. It can go playful, elegant, or modern – all depending on your fabric choices. Winter Magic brings whimsical, fun, scrappy vibes to the design. It would also look amazing with Riley Blake Basics! The pattern comes with a less scrappy version if you would like to use Confetti Cotton solids or other blenders.
Quilting and Finishing Touches
This quilt came together so beautifully and has quickly become a new favourite. It’s got a swilrly snowflake pantograph with Vlieseline bamboo-cotton wadding, which gives great stitch definition and a nice drape too. It’s the kind of quilt you want to snuggle under with a cup of tea while watching snow fall outside the window (or imagining it, if you live somewhere like I do!).

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a winter project that feels equal parts modern and magical, I can’t recommend this pairing enough: the Snowflake Quilt by Modern Handcraft and the Winter Magic collection by Dani Mogstad. It’s a perfect match!
