Pick an easy pattern

When I teach introduction to dressmaking courses, we always start with pyjamas because they are a fast garment to make, and the fit is relatively forgiving. There are three options when it comes to choosing a pattern that works for you:

  1. You can self draft from a pair that you own
  2. You can buy a pattern
  3. You can find a free pattern online

I have self-drafted pyjamas before, which I’d recommend if you don’t have easy access to a printer. However, I used the free Trevor Pyjama Pants by Pivot Point Patterns for this project, which can be downloaded from their website and has a really handy video tutorial available.

Make it easier with helpful tools

In order to get started with garment making, you just need a sewing machine that can do straight stitch and preferably zigzag stitch too. There are a couple of other tools that I find particularly handy: a hot hemmer can help you iron your hems and get super straight edges, and your everyday pins are essential to sew accurately.

Pick a fun fabric

Pyjamas are a great opportunity to choose a fun fabric print. These winter scenes from the Northern Lights collection are perfect for the colder season, without being just for Christmas. The Riley Blake flannel is super soft too, which makes it a great choice for any comfy loungewear.
