Ruby Tee with Tulip Cottage

Hi there! It’s Luci from Sea Garden Sewing. Today I’m going to show off my Ruby Top using the Tulip Cottage fabric line by Melissa Mortenson.

Growing up in the Midwest, I learned an unspoken road rule: When you pass by cows on the road, you have to announce to the rest of the car that there are cows.

So naturally, when I saw this print in the Tulip Cottage fabric line, I excitedly exclaimed “cows!!” and knew that I wanted to feature the print in my make.

I decided on making the Ruby Top pattern by Made by Rae. I’d never made a garment before, and the pattern was described as a beginner-friendly garment that worked well with woven fabrics.

I learned a lot from this pattern, but still think it’s doable for a knowledgeable sewist who is new to garments. The pattern provided 4 different options for seam finishing, which was super helpful.

I made my own bias binding with the “Green Stitches” print to match the yoke, which was time-consuming but worth it!

I ended up ripping a couple of seams and replacing white thread with light green thread, which looked a lot better for topstitching.

All in all, this project was really fun and I learned a lot in the process! It’s still a bit too chilly out to be wearing a tank top, but I can definitely see myself wearing this more in the spring and summer.

Growing up,in the Midwest. Local dairy had wallpaper like this. They had white fencing across the upper part of room,15 ft. Ceilings so very doable. Later turned into a floral shop. I worked there. When they closed. I took the gate. Just like the one in fabric. I love your top. Hey,there’s cows over there!!!🥰
