Make an Ombre Puff Quilt with Heirloom Red

Hi everyone, it’s Luci from Sea Garden Sewing here! I’m excited to share my latest make, an Ombré Puff Quilt using the Heirloom Red fabric line by My Mind’s Eye.

For most of my makes, I’ve always ventured into vibrant colors and patterns that pack a punch. I was drawn to the Heirloom Red line due to the variety of designs and the striking contrast that the red and white provide.

The first time I saw Heirloom Red, I immediately decided the perfect recipient of a quilt made from this collection. My service dog Maggie sports her red and white Can Do Canines vest every day when we’re out and about. I thought I’d treat her by making her a quilt for her to lay on in our cubicle at the office.

I decided to create an Ombré Puff Quilt, following the tutorial created by Lo and Behold Stitchery. When considering a quilt pattern, I wanted to focus on comfort over intricacy. A puff quilt adds extra padding for a pillowy spot to lay on, and the simplicity of patchwork lets the prints shine.

I’d definitely recommend stuffing each puff with less Poly-fil stuffing than you’d think. It’s not only easier to sew together; it also creates a more plush, flexible quilt.

To avoid wrestling with my domestic machine, I hand-tied the quilt using DMC Pearl Cotton #8. This method is also a bit more forgiving if your patchwork squares don’t totally line up after stuffing them.

I prefer the look of hand binding, but ultimately decided to attach binding by machine. It saved me a lot of time, and I can rest easy knowing that my dog will literally never consider quilt binding aesthetics in her life anyways.

As fun as this quilt was to make, it was even more fun to give. Maggie takes her comfort seriously and has gravitated towards it for naps already. I’d say it’s a massive hit!

If you’re considering making a puff quilt yourself, I’d encourage you to try it out! I’d recommend starting by creating a baby-sized (or even cushion-sized) puff quilt to minimize bulk and weight while you get used to the construction methods.
