Strawberry Squares Crochet Afghan
Are strawberries just a summer fruit? Sometimes in the PNW we have them into October! Regardless, you can celebrate the sweetest berry year-round if you crochet them.

I’m a die-hard strawberry lover, whether it is in design or dessert – I love them all! So this was a really fun crochet project to put together, even though it took a lot of time.
This was definitely a long-term project that took me a while to complete, but it turned out so cute! I used just 3 colors of Chunky Thread to crochet a granny square afghan with a berry sweet twist.

I used this pattern tutorial for the strawberry squares, just tweaking it slightly. It was a bit challenging to figure out since the instructions are not in English, but the subtitles helped. I used Riley Red, Chamomile, and Spring Green.
Then I crocheted a 4 round basic granny square for the alternate blocks. There are 99 squares all together!

I combined them in a layout of 9 x 11 squares, and crocheted them together using my favorite method – the continuous braid join, which I’ve used before in Chunky Thread afghans featured on this blog. I highly recommend!

The edging was my own design. I wanted something to pull together the colors, frame it, and add some fun berry-like texture; I really enjoy how it turned out.

I lost track of the exact amount of skeins I used for this afghan, but it was approximately 12 skeins of Chamomile, 7 skeins of Red, and 1 skein of Spring Green. My finished size was 42 x 56″ so it’s a nice lap throw size.

Whether you display it for summer or autumn, it adds such a pop of retro color in a favorite classic motif!

But whew! Maybe I’ll make something smaller for my next Chunky Thread feature. 🙂 Happy last month of fall, everyone!
