Uncle Drosselmeyer Doll: Stitching the Magic Behind the Story

Every great story has a character working quietly behind the scenes, bringing a little extra magic to the adventure. In The Nutcracker, that character is Uncle Drosselmeyer. With his kind heart, mysterious inventions, and unforgettable style, he has always been one of my favorite characters to recreate in fabric.
Inspired by this beloved storyteller, I designed the Uncle Drosselmeyer Doll as a timeless keepsake that celebrates the wonder and imagination of the holiday season. Whether you enjoy traditional sewing or machine embroidery, Uncle Drosselmeyer is available in both a sewing version and an in-the-hoop machine embroidery version, giving every maker the opportunity to create this memorable character in the way they enjoy most.
A Doll Full of Character
From his signature eye patch and distinguished white hair to his tailored waistcoat, red bow tie, and tall top hat, every detail was thoughtfully designed to capture Uncle Drosselmeyer’s classic appearance. Sewn using fabrics from my Nutcracker Tradition collection for Riley Blake Designs, he has a timeless Christmas feel that looks beautiful displayed throughout the holiday season.
An optional cape is also available as a bonus pattern, allowing you to add another layer of storytelling to this charming character.
Two Ways to Create Your Uncle Drosselmeyer
One of my favorite things about this pattern is that you can choose the construction method that best suits your sewing style.
Machine Embroidery Version
The in-the-hoop version is available in three finished sizes:
- 14″
- 16″
- 18″
with files included for 5×7, 6×10, and 8×12 hoops. It combines machine embroidery with simple sewing techniques to create Uncle Drosselmeyer’s embroidered face, clothing, hat, and finishing details.
Sewing Version
If you enjoy traditional doll making, the sewing version allows you to slowly build each piece while adding beautiful hand-finished details that give Uncle Drosselmeyer his unique personality. It’s a relaxing project that celebrates the joy of handmade storytelling.
