Stitching Movement and Story with the A Gentle Gust Quilt
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.
I love sewing not only patterns that tell a story but fabrics that tell a story. My newest collection for Riley Blake Designs, A Spoonful of Sugar, was created with that exact hope in mind.
Today I want to share the A Gentle Gust Quilt , a design inspired by movement, imagination, and the simple joy of watching something drift through the air.

A Quilt Full of Motion
One of the things I love most about this quilt is how it feels like it is in motion. The umbrella blocks are arranged in different directions, creating the feeling of a gentle breeze moving across the quilt.
The layout brings together a mix of small and large umbrella blocks, along with curved handle shapes that guide your eye across the design. The finished quilt measures approximately 62″ × 74 3/4″, making it a lovely size for a bed or cozy reading space.

Inspired by April Showers
There is something special about sewing with the seasons in mind, and this quilt feels right at home in April. The umbrella shapes naturally bring to mind gentle spring showers, puddles, and fresh beginnings.
This is a wonderful time to lean into soft colors and playful prints. Using florals and light backgrounds can give your quilt a fresh and airy feel, while deeper tones can add contrast and depth, much like a cloudy sky before the rain.
It is a project that captures that quiet, cozy feeling of being indoors while the rain falls outside.

Building the Design Step by Step
This quilt is traditionally pieced and is a great project for confident beginners who are ready to explore a few new techniques.
You will work with:
- Stitch and flip methods to create angled shapes and clean edges
- Half square triangles to build movement within the umbrella tops
- Careful fabric placement to keep the design balanced
Taking time to label your pieces and organize your blocks as you go can make a big difference in keeping the process enjoyable and stress free.

A Spoonful of Sugar in Every Block
The A Spoonful of Sugar fabrics really shine in this quilt. Each umbrella becomes a small canvas where prints and colors come together in a thoughtful way.
Mixing florals, plaids, and soft background prints helps create contrast while still keeping the overall design cohesive. Some umbrellas feel bold and detailed, while others feel light and airy, which adds depth across the quilt.
This is a wonderful project for exploring how different fabrics interact with each other and how placement can change the feel of the entire quilt.

A Quilt That Tells a Gentle Story
To me, this quilt feels like a quiet story. It brings to mind breezy afternoons, open skies, and simple moments of imagination.
Projects like this remind us that quilting is not just about assembling pieces. It is about creating something that holds meaning, movement, and creativity all at once.
If you decide to sew your own A Gentle Gust Quilt using A Spoonful of Sugar, I would love to see what you create.
Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
