Stars & Stitches – Beach Cover Up

From Beach to Barefoot Bar
Spring arrives not with a whisper, but with a soft exhale—the trade winds settle, the sun lingers just a little longer, and the ocean begins calling your name with quiet insistence.
A beach day becomes inevitable.
And as the day winds down—salt still on your skin, الرمال tucked between your toes—you find yourself drifting toward the barefoot bar. The kind of place where time loosens its grip and shoes are entirely optional.
What you need in that moment is something effortless. Something that moves with you.
Enter… batik rayon and McCalls M7964

Rayon, of course, has its own temperament. Ignore it at your peril. Before cutting, always pre-wash and dry—it has a habit of shrinking when it pleases, and never when it’s convenient. There’s nothing quite as tragic as a perfect garment betrayed in the first wash.
A serger becomes less of a luxury here, more of a trusted companion—tidying seams, taming edges, keeping everything in quiet order.

I even serge before hemming. It lends just enough structure to an otherwise fluid fabric, making a rolled hem not just possible, but pleasurable.

And then… the detail that makes people look twice.
That twist in the front? Not a twist at all, but a clever illusion—created by a one-inch opening at the raised waistline. Subtle. Unexpected. Entirely delightful.

Perfect for wandering the shoreline…

…or slipping seamlessly from sand to market, from market to the barefoot bar—never missing a beat.

Special thanks to Nialani of @niaswim for modeling. She designs and creates her swimsuits right here on the island of Kauai—where craftsmanship and ocean air seem to go hand in hand.
Because some days don’t really end… they simply soften into evening.
Toni of @tigertextiles—quietly stitching together moments between sand and sunset.
