Sewing a Story with the Michael Doll

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.

One of my favorite things about designing fabric collections is seeing how they come to life in projects that tell a story. Dolls have always held a special place in my heart because they invite imagination, storytelling, and gentle play.

Today I am excited to share the Michael Doll, stitched using fabrics from my newest Riley Blake Designs collection, A Spoonful of Sugar.

The Michael Doll is a machine embroidery project created in the hoop. The pattern includes three finished sizes, allowing you to make a doll that fits your hoop size and your sewing plans. The finished dolls measure approximately 14 inches, 16 inches, or 18 inches tall depending on the hoop size you choose.

One of the things I love about this design is the charming little outfit. Michael wears a sweet jacket, pants, and a soft cap that bring his personality to life. When sewn with the storybook prints from A Spoonful of Sugar, the finished doll feels cozy, playful, and full of character.

A Project for Creativity

This doll pattern is designed for machine embroidery and is stitched mostly in the hoop. Arms, legs, and body sections are created step by step before being assembled into the finished doll.

The pattern also allows you to personalize your doll in meaningful ways. Hair color, skin tones, and fabrics can all be adjusted so that every maker can create a doll that feels special and unique.

When I design dolls, I always imagine the stories children might create with them. A handmade doll can become a companion for adventures, quiet reading time, or bedtime routines.

A Spoonful of Sugar Inspiration

For this version of Michael, I used prints from A Spoonful of Sugar that highlight the gentle blues and soft florals from the collection. The fabrics work beautifully together and help bring warmth and personality to the finished doll.

The jacket and hat are especially fun to stitch because they allow the prints to shine. Small details like pockets and lining fabrics give the outfit a thoughtful finish and add depth to the design.

Handmade Dolls That Tell a Story

Creating a doll like Michael is not only a sewing project. It is an opportunity to create something meaningful with your hands. Handmade dolls often become treasured keepsakes that are loved for many years.

If you decide to sew your own Michael Doll using fabrics from A Spoonful of Sugar, I would love to see your project and celebrate what you create.

I can’t wait to see what you create!
