Threads of Grace Hourglass Quilt for Gracee -

Some quilts are just pretty. And then there are quilts that feel like a moment—a milestone stitched into fabric.

This one is both.

I made this quilt for my daughter Gracee as she heads off to college, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to look at it without getting a little emotional. It’s the kind of quilt that carries all the “firsts” and “lasts” in one place: late-night talks, growing up too fast, big dreams, and that mix of excitement and lump-in-your-throat pride that comes with watching your kid step into the next chapter.

The fabric line I used is Threads of Grace by Kassidy Grace, and honestly… the name alone feels like it was meant for this quilt.

The palette is soft and steady—warm neutrals, muted greens, dusty blues, golden mustards, rusts, and deeper berry tones—balanced with low-volume prints that keep everything feeling light and airy. It’s scrappy in the best way: lots of variety, but still cohesive and calm.

It feels feminine without being frilly, modern without being cold—exactly what I wanted for Gracee.

For the design, I used a pattern from Cluck Cluck Sew, and it couldn’t have been more perfect for this project.

It’s the Hourglass Quilt Pattern, which creates that subtle spinning movement across the quilt—like little pinwheel moments scattered through the grid. From far away it reads clean and modern; up close you can really enjoy all the individual fabrics and tiny details.

If you’ve never made an hourglass quilt before, this is such a great one to try. It’s approachable, super stash-friendly, and the end result looks way more complex than it actually is.

It won’t be long before you turn a stack of blocks into a finished quilt. This pattern is so easy to follow!

I went with a flowing allover quilting design (those swirls add the prettiest texture) because it ties the whole scrappy top together without competing with the piecing.

The back is mostly calm and creamy, with a pieced stripe panel that adds a fun “bonus” detail. I love a backing that feels intentional but still lets the quilting shine.

More than anything, I wanted Gracee to take something with her that feels like home.

Something she can throw on her bed when college feels new and overwhelming. Something she can wrap up in when she’s studying late. Something that quietly reminds her: you’re loved, you’re capable, and you’ve got people cheering you on—always.
