A Medallion Quilt with Ivy Reese by Deena Rutter

I’m forever making medallion quilts – there are plenty of them dotted throughout this blog if you scroll back. Most of the time I just make them up as I go, but every now and then a pattern catches my eye. This time it was the Northpoint Quilt, and I couldn’t resist giving it a go.

The Northpoint Quilt Pattern

The Northpoint Quilt is designed by sew.be, an Australian designer who is known for creating thoughtful, modern quilt designs with just the right mix of tradition and playfulness. What drew me in was the centre medallion and the layers that radiate out, it feels classic but with a fresh spin. There’s some applique, which I love, though I haven’t had much time for lately in the midst of a busy life. Beyond that, there’s plenty of small, intricate piecing that gives the whole quilt a scrappy, joyful look.

Ivy Reese by Deena Rutter

For fabric, I chose the Ivy Reese collection by Deena Rutter. It’s full of painterly florals, leafy prints, and gentle textures. I think it works beautifully in a medallion quilt, and some of its motifs echo the design of the quilt! The different scales in the prints made it easy to balance the busier sections with calmer ones.

To tie it all together, I added Sparkler in Lake Blue from Riley Blake Basics. It’s one of the coordinates from the collection, and here it really sings against the florals. I think Golden Confetti Cotton would also have been a fun alternative for something brighter. You can find all the different options for coordinating basics on the Ivy Reese storyboard.

A Scrappy, Organised Christmas Gift

The small piecing in this pattern gave me the chance to use a real mix of fabrics from the collection, exactly the scrappy look I love. And the best bit? This quilt is destined to be a Christmas present. I don’t often have gifts finished with time to spare, so I’m feeling rather organised for once!
