A Daisy Dot Summer
It’s summer here in Florida and that means it’s HOT! While the hot weather is great for going to the beach, it’s not always great for blooming flowers. To add a bit more color to my surroundings, I turned to Riley Blake Design’s latest expression batik collection, Daisy Dots!

This beautifully colorful collection has a whopping 28 prints! With prints including ginghams, daisies, swirls and foliage, it provides endless opportunities to create to your hearts desire! And we can’t overlook the colors that range from the lightest teals and yellows to the darkest blues and purples!
For this collection, I decided to make a quilt and after browsing the free patterns on Riley Blake Design’s website, I found the PERFECT pattern. And of course, it’s a FREE pattern!

This pattern is called Rolie Flower and comes together with ONE (1) Rolie Polie 2.5″ pre-cute bundle and 2 1/2 yards of background fabric. I had this top sewn up in a weekend and that includes ironing ALL 28 prints of fabric and cutting strips because I used yardage instead of a pre-cut.

I made stacks of five (5) strips (as the pattern states to do) prior to sewing anything because I wanted to ensure my fabrics were nicely mixed up. I didn’t want the same colors or patterns in the same group if I could avoid it.

And while the pattern doesn’t say to do this, I made “bonus” blocks with the off cuts (see the picture above). The pattern says to sew one line and cut off the excess. But by adding a second line of stitching a half inch away, you can get two half square triangles from each block. And there are 24 blocks in this pattern! Now to decide what to do with all my bonus blocks!

This collection was perfect for this pattern and I couldn’t help but smile the entire time I was piecing my blocks together. I even considered selecting only the brighter colors from the Daisy Dots collection and instead of using white for the background, using black! I think that would really pop!
I decided to use some of my left over strips to make a scrappy binding!

I highly recommend getting ahold of this beautiful collection! Whatever you decide to make with these fabrics, it will bring a smile to your face every time you look at it. And who doesn’t like to smile?
Happy sewing!
