Feather Fly Quilt: A Beautiful Blend of Nature and Creativity

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.

Nature has always been a wonderful source of inspiration for my sewing projects. From the colors of changing leaves to the delicate patterns found in feathers, there are so many beautiful details waiting to be recreated through fabric.

Today, I am excited to share my Feather Fly Quilt, made using my Boho Batiks fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs. This quilt brings together soft earthy tones, beautiful batik prints, and a playful feather design that celebrates the beauty of nature.

A Quilt Full of Color and Movement

The Feather Fly Quilt finishes at 68″ × 92″, making it a lovely size for a bed, guest room, or cozy space in your home.

The design features 13 pieced feather blocks, each showcasing a different combination of fabrics from the Boho Batiks collection. I love how the feathers appear to float across the background, creating movement and interest throughout the quilt.

The collection’s warm coral tones, soft sage greens, deep blues, and delicate neutral prints work together to create a peaceful, nature-inspired design.

Enjoy the Beauty of Boho Batiks

One of the things I love about working with batik fabrics is the beautiful texture and variation found in each print.

For the Feather Fly Quilt, I chose fabrics that highlight the feather shapes while allowing the background to create a gentle sense of space around them.

The rich colors and subtle patterns bring personality to each feather, and the variety of prints makes every block enjoyable to sew.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to play with fabric placement and explore how different colors work together within a repeating design.

Three Tips for Sewing the Feather Fly Quilt

1. Take Your Time with Stitch and Flip

This quilt uses the Stitch and Flip method to create the angled sections of each feather. Mark your diagonal sewing lines carefully and press each completed section to help keep your feather shapes accurate.

2. Organize Your Feather Blocks

Each feather uses several fabric pieces, so I recommend preparing and labeling your pieces before you begin. Keeping each feather’s fabrics together will help you stay organized throughout the project.

3. Plan Your Quilt Layout

Before joining your completed feathers, arrange them on a design wall or large surface. Take time to enjoy the different color combinations and check the placement of each block before assembling your quilt.

A Quilt Inspired by the Outdoors

The Feather Fly Quilt is a lovely way to bring the colors and textures of nature into your home.

I can imagine this quilt draped across a bed, displayed in a cozy guest room, or given as a thoughtful handmade gift to someone who loves the outdoors.

Whether you enjoy creating the individual feather blocks or watching the entire quilt come together, I hope this project encourages you to find inspiration in the beautiful details around you.

Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
