Nutcracker Sweet Quilt: Stitching a Timeless Christmas Tradition
There is something special about quilts that become part of your family’s holiday traditions. They are pulled out year after year, wrapped around loved ones during Christmas movies, displayed throughout the season, and filled with memories that grow over time.
That was the inspiration behind my Nutcracker Sweet Quilt. Made using my Nutcracker Tradition fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs, this quilt combines a classic Nutcracker with sweet candy-inspired blocks to create a festive design that celebrates the magic of Christmas. The finished quilt measures approximately 60½” × 67½”, making it a wonderful size for displaying or cuddling up with throughout the holiday season.

A Quilt Full of Christmas Charm
The Nutcracker takes center stage in this quilt, surrounded by colorful candy blocks that add balance, movement, and a playful holiday feel. I wanted the design to capture the warmth and nostalgia of Christmas while keeping the piecing approachable and enjoyable.
The fabrics from the Nutcracker Tradition collection bring the quilt to life with cheerful reds, rich greens, soft snowy backgrounds, and storybook-inspired prints that help every block feel connected.

A Fun Quilt for Growing Your Skills
The Nutcracker Sweet Quilt is a traditionally pieced quilt designed for confident beginners and intermediate quilters who enjoy building a larger project one section at a time. It combines simple quilting techniques, including Half Square Triangles and Stitch-and-Flip construction, to create the Nutcracker and candy blocks with crisp, clean shapes.
As each section comes together, you’ll begin to see the Nutcracker appear piece by piece, making every sewing session exciting.

Three Tips for Sewing the Nutcracker Sweet Quilt
1. Label Your Pieces Before You Begin
The Nutcracker block includes many individual pieces. Taking a few minutes to organize and label your fabrics before sewing will make assembly much smoother.
2. Press Carefully Throughout the Quilt
Pressing as you complete each section helps your seams stay accurate and allows the larger blocks to fit together beautifully when assembling the quilt top.
3. Enjoy Watching the Story Unfold
Rather than rushing to finish, enjoy each stage of the quilt. From the Nutcracker’s hat and beard to the colorful candy blocks surrounding him, every section brings another piece of the Christmas story to life.

A Quilt to Enjoy for Many Christmases
One of my favorite things about holiday quilting is creating projects that become part of family traditions. Whether your Nutcracker Sweet Quilt is displayed on a favorite chair, wrapped around little ones during story time, or brought out with your Christmas decorations each year, I hope it fills your home with warmth, creativity, and joyful memories for years to come.
