Sewing a Story with the Jane Doll
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.
I love sewing not only patterns that tell a story but fabrics that tell a story. My newest collection for Riley Blake Designs, A Spoonful of Sugar, was created with that exact hope in mind.
Today I am excited to share the Jane Doll, a sweet companion to the Michael Doll and a beautiful way to bring storytelling into your sewing.
The Jane Doll is a machine embroidery project created in the hoop and includes three finished sizes. Depending on your hoop size, your finished doll will measure approximately 14 inches, 16 inches, or 18 inches tall.

A Doll with Thoughtful Details
Jane has a soft and classic look, with a gathered skirt, a structured jacket, and a charming hat that completes her outfit. One of the most special features of this doll is her jacket. It adds a tailored feel and gives you a chance to play with contrast and layering in a really creative way.
When choosing fabrics for Jane, I like to pick a slightly more structured print for the jacket and something softer or more detailed for the dress underneath. This helps each piece stand out while still working together as a complete outfit.
Her hat is another detail that brings everything together. Using a coordinating fabric or even a subtle print can give the doll a polished and finished look.

A Project with Creative Possibilities
This doll is stitched mostly in the hoop, making it a rewarding project for those who enjoy machine embroidery. Each section is built step by step, and then everything is assembled into a finished doll.
Jane is a wonderful project for experimenting with fabric placement. Small changes in print choice can completely change the look of the doll. You can create something soft and traditional or something a little more playful depending on the fabrics you choose.
When I design dolls like Jane, I always think about how they will be used. Handmade dolls often become part of daily routines, from imaginative play to quiet moments at the end of the day.

A Spoonful of Sugar Inspiration
For this version of Jane, I used prints from A Spoonful of Sugar that highlight warm tones, gentle florals, and classic plaids. These fabrics work beautifully for layering, especially in the jacket and skirt.
Mixing prints from the collection allows you to create depth without overwhelming the design. The balance of soft and detailed fabrics helps Jane feel both cozy and refined.

A Meaningful Addition to a Story
Jane is the second doll in our four doll series inspired by the Mary Poppins story, making her a special part of a collection that celebrates storytelling through fabric and play.
Creating a doll like Jane is more than a sewing project. It is a way to create something meaningful that can be treasured for years to come.
If you decide to sew your own Jane Doll using A Spoonful of Sugar, I would love to see what you create.
Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
