Sewing a Story with the Mary Poppins Quilt
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.
I love sewing not only patterns that tell a story but fabrics that tell a story. My newest collection for Riley Blake Designs, A Spoonful of Sugar, was created with that exact hope in mind.
One of the quilts from this collection that truly brings that storytelling spirit to life is the Mary Poppins Quilt. Inspired by the beloved storybook character, this quilt captures the charm, imagination, and gentle magic that so many of us remember from childhood.
The finished quilt measures 54 1/2 inches by 88 inches, making it a wonderful size for a bed quilt or a cozy piece to display in a child’s room or reading nook.

A Quilt Full of Storybook Charm
The Mary Poppins Quilt features a beautifully pieced character block that brings the famous umbrella carrying nanny to life in fabric. From her hat and scarf to the flowing skirt and classic boots, each section of the quilt is thoughtfully constructed to create the recognizable silhouette.
The quilt is assembled in sections including the head, body, skirt, and shoes blocks, which are pieced together to create the full character design.
This structure makes the quilt a fun and engaging project for quilters who enjoy building a design step by step.

Bringing the Quilt to Life with Fabric
For this version of the quilt, I used prints from A Spoonful of Sugar, which felt like the perfect match for a Mary Poppins inspired design. The soft florals, delicate plaids, and gentle colors help create a warm storybook feeling throughout the quilt.
The skirt section is especially lovely because it gives you space to showcase your favorite prints. Mixing the florals and coordinating prints allows the character’s dress to feel lively and full of movement.
Little details like the plaid scarf and the patterned dress bring personality to the quilt and make the finished piece feel playful and full of charm.

A Quilt That Celebrates Imagination
One of the things I love about quilting is the way it allows us to celebrate stories through fabric and stitching. This quilt is a wonderful reminder of the magic of imagination and the comfort of handmade creations.
Projects like this can become treasured keepsakes, especially when they are sewn with fabrics that carry a story of their own.

If you decide to make the Mary Poppins Quilt. using A Spoonful of Sugar, I would love to see your project and celebrate what you create.
I can’t wait to see what you create.
Yours in crafting connections,
Jennifer Long
