A Spoonful of Sugar: Bringing a Story to Life Through Fabric

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story. I love sewing not only patterns that tell a story but fabrics that tell a story. My newest collection for Riley Blake Designs, A Spoonful of Sugar, was created with that exact hope in mind.

Inspired by classic childhood stories, the collection is filled with gentle florals, teapots, birds in flight, kites, and charming houses. The color palette mixes soft corals and blues with warm cream and deep navy, giving you a beautiful balance of whimsy and elegance. From the main prints to the tiny motifs, every detail is meant to stir your imagination and bring joy to the sewing process.

This month, as A Spoonful of Sugar begins arriving in quilt shops, I wanted to share one of the first projects made with it. A quilt that celebrates both storytelling and creativity.

Meet the Practically Perfect Quilt

The Practically Perfect quilt is made using Foundation Paper Piecing and features a cast of storybook characters inspired by a much-loved story. You’ll find a joyful carousel horse, a cheerful penguin, a tall lamp post, and even a parrot-topped umbrella, all surrounded by playful swirls and pieced scenes. In the center stands a graceful figure, hands folded, coat buttoned, with a familiar glint in her eye.

What makes this quilt feel truly special is how each block brings one part of the story to life. From the ruffled skirts to the cityscape backdrop, the finished piece invites you to pause and smile. Just like the story it’s based on.

This quilt was designed as part of an upcoming Block of the Month experience. Every block will be broken down into simple steps, making it approachable even for those who are brand new to FPP.

A Fabric Collection That Carries the Magic

Every character in the Practically Perfect quilt is made using prints from the Spoonful of Sugar collection. You’ll spot florals in dress skirts, tonal lace prints in lamp posts and rooftops, and playful teapots hiding in corners. These fabrics were carefully selected to match the energy of the story. From windy adventures to quiet moments under cherry blossoms.

One of my favorite details is the dark border print, which frames the quilt like a storybook cover. It helps the scenes stand out and gives the finished quilt a polished look that feels complete and heartfelt.

If you’re planning your next project and looking for a collection that can carry a narrative, A Spoonful of Sugar is full of possibilities. For quilting, crafting, storytelling, and more.

There is something joyful about sewing a story into every block. I hope this quilt and fabric line inspire you to stitch something meaningful this season.

I can’t wait to see what you create.
Yours in crafting together,
Jennifer Long
