A Quilty Holiday Sweatshirt

Happy holiday season fibre friends! Shereece Nicole of Sew Hooked on Treasures is back with a new project for you!

Wanting to add some quilty flare to your holiday wardrobe? I have the perfect tutorial just for you…

With some Riley Blake Basics cut into 2½” strips, a sweatshirt and this tutorial, I added these candy cane-like quilt details to my kiddo’s candy cane sweatshirt. The stripes complemented the print perfectly!

Fabric: Confetti Cotton, Shades, Sparkler, Swiss Dot, Blossom, American Pin Dot, Seasonal Basics

I had some leftover flannel from the backing of my HRTree quilt, so I used it in as the lining for the pocket. Just a little added softness and warmth for those hands.

What’s in Your Closet?

Your holiday sweatshirt doesn’t have to have candy canes to do this same design. Just about any shirt in your closet will work and you can use coordinating colors from any of the RBD Basics. For example, this sweatshirt would look great with green or red and white stripes. You could also do a coordinating gingham pattern.

You can also start with a plain sweatshirt and use holiday colors to make it look Christmasy. Red, green, white, teal, and (most importantly 😉) pink will be perfect! Keeping it as a simple strip quilt top will expedite cutting and sewing.

Please don’t feel like you need to create all new quilt tops! This project is a great alternative for finishing some of those WIPs in your stash. If it’s a matter of a sweatshirt to match a quilt top you have made, check your local thrift stores or there this this economical yet fabulous option from Amazon with many color options.

Feel free to make a non-holiday version too with this same technique. I started with the one below and so far I have made three. However, I have two tops and two sweatshirts ready to go for more!

I so enjoy seeing what you create. Please share yours with me on Instagram, Facebook or by email. You can also reach out in those places or in the comments below with questions.

Stitch on me hearties, 🩷
