Winter Magic – Lumi Quilt

A Wintry Star Brought to Life

Hi, Tamara here from Remi Vail Studio. I’m so excited to share my newest Riley Blake Design’s make with you today. As soon as I saw the Winter Magic fabric collection by Dani Mogstad, I knew it would be perfect for a quilt that celebrates everything I love about winter. Soft snowfall, cozy evenings, and that familiar quiet that settles across my home state of Minnesota this time of year.

For this project, I paired Winter Magic with my upcoming quilt pattern, Lumi Quilt, which will be releasing in December 2025. The collection’s palette of blues and warm taupes brought the woodland details to life in the sweetest way.

Meet the Fabric – Winter Magic

Winter Magic is filled with classic winter charm. You will find tiny trees dusted with snow, swirling snowflakes, stripes, and the sweetest tossed florals. Dani blends soft sky blues with deeper night sky shades and accents of warm honey brown. Together they create a palette that feels both nostalgic and fresh, festive without being overly themed.

Working with this collection was such a joy. Each print adds a new layer of texture and story, and they play together beautifully inside the geometric snowflake shapes of the Lumi Quilt.

About the Quilt Pattern – Lumi Quilt

Lumi Quilt is designed by me – Tamara Darragh for Remi Vail Studio. Releasing December 2025.

Lumi is the Finnish word for snow, which feels like the perfect name for a quilt inspired by winter’s quiet beauty. Lumi features a large medallion snowflake star, that spans the entire quilt.

Winter Magic was a natural fit for the pattern. The deep navy and white dot background creates a night sky effect, while the soft blues and warm browns highlight the movement of the design.

Quilting and Thread

For the quilting, I used the Swirly Snowflakes pantograph designed by Sew Shabby Quilting. It adds the perfect wintery texture, almost like a snow globe.

I quilted it using Aurifil 40/3 weight thread in Beige, color 2314. The thread color blends beautifully against the navy background while still giving the lighter fabrics a little sparkle and definition.

Coordinating Pieced Quilt Backing

I had several scraps and leftover cuts from the collection, so I decided to piece a backing that feels like a second quilt. I created a sawtooth star, mixed with several strips of the coordinating fabrics to fill out the remaining space. It turned into a lovely companion to the front, and I love that nothing went to waste.

Quilt Binding

For the binding, I couldn’t resist using an RBD basic navy stripe and create a flange. The stripe gives the edge such a crisp finish, and the tea dye colored Poparazzi flange ties in the warm browns from the quilt. It feels like a perfect little frame.
