Sew the Petal Play Hat: A Whimsical Make for Little Explorers

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story. If you’ve been looking for a quick and joyful make that brings imagination to life, the Petal Play Hat might be just the project for you.

Designed for toddlers through youth sizes, this hat comes together with simple techniques and a playful finish. Inspired by the shapes of flowers and stitched with care, the Petal Play Hat is part costume, part keepsake, and all-around fun to sew.

A Hat That Feels Like a Bloom

The Petal Play Hat is crafted from six petal-shaped panels, topped with a leafy stem and optional lining. Once complete, it looks like a flower has gently opened on top of a child’s head — perfect for fairy tale play, dress-up, gardening days, or a spring photo shoot.

This pattern was designed using fabrics from my Thimbelina and Sewing Fairies collections for Riley Blake Designs. The prints bring storybook texture and delicate detail to every petal.
