Hey Pumpkin – Boo Quilt

Hi, Tamara here from Remi Vail Studio! I’m so excited to share the Boo Quilt, made with the Hey Pumpkin fabric collection by My Mind’s Eye for Riley Blake Designs. With dancing skeletons, blushing ghosts, and the happiest Halloween palette, this fabric collection brought a playful charm to my sewing space—and to this sweet and spooky quilt!

Why I Love the Hey Pumpkin Collection

There’s something irresistible about Halloween fabric, especially when it’s packed with pink stars, candy corn, and cheeky little ghosts. The Hey Pumpkin collection is a perfect mix of nostalgic Halloween and modern whimsy—with soft blush tones, classic orange and black, and just enough sparkle to feel magical.

As soon as it arrived in my studio, I knew it needed to become something fun. And what better than a quilt full of ghosts?

The Boo Quilt

The Boo Quilt pattern by The Pattern Basket was the perfect match for this fabric collection. Each ghost block feels like its own little character—from the candy corn cutie 🍬 to the pink starry dreamer 🌟. Once I started sewing, I couldn’t stop. These playful little spirits practically multiplied on their own—sixteen in total!

This is a great pattern if you love mixing and matching prints or creating personality with fabric placement. It’s spooky in the sweetest way possible.

  • Piecing Thread: Aurifil 50 wt
  • Batting: Wool (my favorite for that soft puff and texture)

Quilting Details

To add some movement and whimsy, I longarm quilted this one using the Stellar Stars pantograph by Sew Shabby Quilting. The swirls reminded me of wind on a crisp October night—like the little ghosts were caught floating on a breeze.

I used Aurifil 40/3 weight in 2311 Muslin, which gives the quilting a bit more definition and warmth without overpowering the prints.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Striped & Flanged Binding

I love adding a little flair to the binding, and this quilt was no exception. I used a classic Halloween Stripe (cut on the bias for that candy-cane swirl effect) and tucked in a tiny flange binding using the Black on Cream Poparazzi Basic.

From far away, it looks like a clean frame—but up close, you get this darling dot texture that adds the perfect little pop. Curious how to do this? I’ve got a full Flange Binding Tutorial to walk you through it!

A Hand-Stitched Quilt Label

Every quilt gets a hand-embroidered label from me—and this one might be my favorite yet. I stitched up a smiling little ghost with twinkling stars and pink cheeks, using Aurifil Floss in Light Peony, Light Salmon, and Very Dark Grey.

It’s the sweetest finishing touch and such a meaningful way to leave a little love note behind for future hands who hold the quilt.

Halloween Sewing Tip 🎃

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes tip: seasonal collections usually release months before the actual holiday. If you want to sew with Halloween fabrics, spring is actually the perfect time to start! It gives you plenty of time to enjoy your quilt once spooky season arrives. And let’s be honest… ghost season can be all year long. 👻
