Let’s Get to the Pressing Matter: a Patchwork Ironing Board Cover!
Hello, Everyone! It’s Miriam from Stitch Obsessed, and I am SO excited to show you my latest quilty addition to my sewing space: a Patchwork Ironing Board Cover!
Have you noticed how drab store-bought ironing board covers are? I don’t know about you, but I love having as much beautiful fabric around me as possible (even for my ironing board!) And let me tell you, a DIY ironing board cover is WAY easier than you may think.
First, Let’s Talk About This Incredible Fabric Line: Press On!
Before you watch the tutorial video, let’s chat about this beautiful fabric. When I saw the gorgeous fabrics in J. Wrecker Frisch’s new collection, “Press On,” I knew I wanted to make a cover for my ironing board. It features vintage irons and sewing pattern instructions that are simply adorable!
The line was actually inspired by Jenny Doan’s (of Missouri Star Quilt Co.) vintage iron collection, and J. Wrecker Frisch knocked this fabric line out of the park. Not only are the prints perfection, but the colors are so rich and have a fun, vintage vibe. I tried to choose as many different prints and colors as possible to give my ironing board a truly scrappy, patchwork look.
Why a Patchwork Ironing Board Cover?
It’s no secret that I LOVE anything patchwork, and I have often wondered why you never see patchwork ironing board covers. So, I made it my mission to not only make one but also test it out to make sure it’s a viable way to make a cover for an ironing board. (Hint: It totally is!)
Here are a few concerns I had with making a pieced cover instead of a whole-cloth version:
- Will the seams hold up to the movement of the iron?
- Will the seams transfer to whatever fabric I am pressing?
- Will the fabrics (especially the reds) bleed or rub off on my pressed fabrics?
Is a Patchwork Ironing Board Cover Worth It?
Short answer: YES! Not only was it a super fun project to work on, but it sparks joy every time I look at it, which is a massive bonus for me! I have used it for many hours since making it because I wanted to make sure it would stand the test before telling you all about it.
I’m happy to report that my initial concerns have not been an issue.
Can I promise those things will never happen? Well, no, but I can say that with my many hours of use, I never once had a seam transfer to the block I was pressing, no color bleeding occurred, and none of my seams warped or came undone.
Now that we’ve cleared those few things up check out my video below. In it, I walk you step by step through how to make an ironing board cover. This project is great for scraps, charm packs, or yardage of your favorite fabrics.
Thank you so much for checking out this tutorial. I really hope you give it a try! Thank you so much to Riley Blake Designs for giving me the opportunity to share this fun project with some new quilty friends! Have a beautiful day!
Best Wishes and Happy Stitches!
