Butterfly Release Pillow: A Handmade Reminder of New Beginnings

There is something so special about butterflies. They remind us that beautiful things often come from patience, growth, and embracing each new season. That inspiration is what led me to design the Butterfly Release Pillow using my Boho Batiks fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs.

A Wonderful Introduction to Appliqué

This beginner-friendly project is a great way to explore raw edge appliqué. Using fusible adhesive, each butterfly is positioned on the background before being stitched in place with your favourite finishing stitch, whether that’s a zig zag, blanket stitch, or satin stitch.

It’s a relaxing project that comes together quickly while giving you plenty of opportunities to make it your own.

Three Tips for Sewing Your Butterfly Release Pillow

1. Play with the Layout

Before fusing your butterflies, take a little time to experiment with their placement. Moving them around until you’re happy with the balance will help create a natural, flowing design.

2. Mix Your Favourite Prints

The Boho Batiks collection includes a wonderful variety of colours and textures. Mixing light and dark fabrics throughout the butterflies creates contrast and helps each one stand out beautifully.

3. Quilt Before You Assemble
