Inspired by this beloved character, I designed the Clara Doll as a timeless keepsake that captures the joy and elegance of the holiday season.

Whether you love traditional sewing or machine embroidery, Clara is available in both a hand-sewn version and an in-the-hoop machine embroidery version, making it easy for every maker to create their own Christmas heirloom.

Clara wears a beautiful festive dress made using fabrics from my Nutcracker Tradition collection for Riley Blake Designs. Delicate embroidery details, soft ballet slippers, a gathered skirt, and a sweet bow complete her classic holiday look.

Two Ways to Create Clara

One of my favorite things about this pattern is that you can choose the construction method that best fits your sewing style.

Machine Embroidery Version

The in-the-hoop version is available in three finished sizes:

• 14″
• 16″
• 18″

with files included for 5×7, 6×10, and 8×12 hoops, making it easy to choose the size that works best for your embroidery machine.

The project combines machine embroidery with simple sewing techniques to create Clara’s beautifully embroidered face, dress details, gathered sleeves, removable skirt, flowing hair, and decorative bow.

Sewing & Hand Embroidery Version

If you enjoy traditional doll making, Clara is also available as a 16-inch hand-sewn doll featuring hand embroidery and fusible appliqué techniques.

This version allows you to slowly stitch each detail by hand, creating a wonderfully personal heirloom that is every bit as magical as the machine embroidered version.

Three Tips for Sewing Clara

1. Take Your Time with the Face

The face is where Clara’s personality shines. Whether you’re stitching with your embroidery machine or hand embroidering her features, slowing down during this step makes all the difference.

2. Press as You Go

Clara’s gathered sleeves, full skirt, and beautiful bow all look their best when each piece is carefully pressed during construction. It gives the finished doll a polished, professional appearance.

3. Make Her Your Own

While Clara is shown using fabrics from the Nutcracker Tradition collection, don’t be afraid to personalize her. Try different skin tones, hair colors, fabrics, or trims to create a Clara that tells your own story. Both patterns include guidance for choosing different hair and skin fabrics.
