Travel Through the Story with the Carpet Bags Quilt

One of my favorite parts of designing a fabric collection is imagining the projects that can help bring the story to life. The Carpet Bags Quilt was created as a celebration of the charming details found throughout my A Spoonful of Sugar fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs.

Inspired by the beloved world of Mary Poppins, this quilt combines a collection of storybook-inspired blocks featuring carpet bags, a tape measure, a lamp, a potted plant, a picture frame, shoes, and a coat rack. Together, they create a quilt that feels like a page from a treasured storybook.

A Quilt Filled with Storybook Details

Measuring approximately 85½” x 88″, this quilt makes a beautiful bed quilt, cozy reading companion, or heirloom piece to display in a sewing room or guest room.

What I love most about this design is how each block tells part of the story. The familiar household objects and travel-inspired details create a quilt that invites you to slow down, look closely, and enjoy all the little touches stitched into every section.

The rich navy background allows the prints from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection to shine while giving the quilt a classic and timeless feel.

Three Tips for Sewing the Carpet Bags Quilt

1. Organize Your Fabrics Before You Begin

This quilt includes several unique blocks and a variety of fabric prints. Taking a few minutes to label and organize your fabrics before sewing will make the process much more enjoyable.

2. Press Carefully for Crisp Details

Many of the blocks include small pieced sections and shaped elements. Consistent pressing helps the blocks come together accurately and keeps points looking sharp.

3. Enjoy One Block at a Time

Rather than focusing on the entire quilt, treat each block as its own small project. Finishing one storybook element at a time makes the quilt feel approachable and allows you to enjoy the creative process along the way.
