Sew a Storybook-Inspired Carpet Bag
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.
One of my favorite things about sewing is creating projects that are both beautiful and useful. The Carpet Bag pattern was inspired by the classic carpet bag carried by Mary Poppins and is the perfect accessory to accompany the A Spoonful of Sugar fabric collection.
With its rounded shape, structured handles, and vintage-inspired details, this bag feels like it has stepped right out of a storybook. Whether you use it as a project bag, library tote, travel bag, or everyday carryall, it is a practical project that is as enjoyable to sew as it is to use.

A Project with Purpose
The finished Carpet Bag measures approximately 14″ x 4″ x 11″, making it a wonderful size for carrying sewing supplies, books, handwork projects, or everyday essentials.
I especially love using bags like this to keep current sewing projects organized. There is something satisfying about having a beautiful handmade bag filled with fabrics, threads, and creative ideas waiting for the next stitching session.

Inspired by A Spoonful of Sugar
This sample was created using fabrics from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection for Riley Blake Designs. The floral prints, storybook details, and soft vintage color palette work beautifully together to create a bag that feels both timeless and playful.
The large floral prints shine on the exterior of the bag, while coordinating prints add interest to the lining and handles. It is a wonderful project for showcasing favorite fabrics and creating something that can be enjoyed every day.

Three Tips for Sewing the Carpet Bag
1. Take Your Time with the Handles
The cording inside the handles gives them structure and a polished finish. Sewing slowly and carefully around the cording helps create smooth, professional-looking handles.
2. Clip Curves and Corners
Because the bag has a rounded shape, clipping curves and reducing bulk at corners will help everything turn smoothly and sit nicely once assembled.
3. Press as You Go
A quick press after each step makes a big difference. Crisp seams and well-pressed pieces help the bag hold its shape and give the finished project a neat appearance.

A Handmade Bag for Everyday Adventures
One of the things I enjoy most about this project is that it can become part of your everyday routine. Fill it with books for a trip to the library, bring along a hand-stitching project for travel, or use it to store fabrics and supplies between sewing sessions.
Every time you carry a handmade bag, you are bringing a little creativity into your day.
Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
