Meet the Bert Doll
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.
One of my favorite parts of designing dolls is bringing beloved storybook characters to life through fabric, stitching, and thoughtful details. Today, I am excited to share the Bert Doll, a cheerful addition to the Modern Rag Doll collection inspired by the classic chimney sweep and street artist we all know and love.
Designed using fabrics from my A Spoonful of Sugar collection for Riley Blake Designs, Bert is full of personality and charming details that make him a joy to create.

A Character Full of Charm
What I love most about Bert is his classic outfit. From his newsboy-style cap to his jacket with little pockets, every detail helps tell the story of this memorable character.
The pattern includes three finished sizes:
- 14″ Doll
- 16″ Doll
- 18″ Doll
No matter which size you choose, Bert is designed to coordinate beautifully with the other dolls in the A Spoonful of Sugar collection.

A Spoonful of Sugar in Every Stitch
This pattern is shown using fabrics from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection, bringing together soft storybook prints, warm colors, and playful details.
I especially love how the collection’s prints work within Bert’s outfit. The fabrics add interest and texture while still allowing the character details to shine.
Small details, like choosing a favorite print for his shirt or selecting hair colors that suit your vision, make each Bert Doll unique.

A Fun Machine Embroidery Project
The Bert Doll is an in-the-hoop machine embroidery pattern designed to guide you through the process step by step.
As you create Bert, you will practice:
- In-the-hoop doll construction
- Appliqué techniques
- Stitch and flip methods
- Stuffing and shaping techniques
- Creating dimensional accessories like his jacket and hat
One of my favorite parts of this pattern is assembling the jacket and cap. These finishing details give Bert so much character and help him truly come to life.

Tips for Success
Before you begin, take a few minutes to organize your fabrics and label your pieces. A little preparation goes a long way when working on a doll with multiple components.
I also recommend taking your time when stuffing the arms, legs, and body. Adding small amounts of stuffing at a time helps create a smooth, even finish and allows the doll to hold its shape beautifully.
And don’t forget to press the jacket carefully as you assemble it. Crisp seams help the finished outfit look polished and professional.

Part of a Storybook Collection
Bert is one of several dolls inspired by the world of A Spoonful of Sugar. Together, the collection allows you to create a cast of storybook characters that can be displayed, gifted, or enjoyed as part of imaginative play.
Whether you are creating Bert on his own or sewing the entire collection, this project offers a wonderful opportunity to combine storytelling and creativity through sewing.
Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
