A Sweet Story Told Through Fabric and Quilting
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.
I love sewing not only patterns that tell a story but fabrics that tell a story. My newest collection for Riley Blake Designs, A Spoonful of Sugar, was created with that exact hope in mind.
Today I want to share the Spoonful of Sugar Quilt, a playful quilt design inspired by baking, storytelling, and the comforting feeling of home.

A Quilt Inspired by Simple Everyday Moments
One of my favorite things about this quilt is how it turns ordinary kitchen elements into something creative and meaningful. The design features a large sugar bowl, a spoon block, and pieced lettering that spell out “SUGAR,” creating a quilt that feels cheerful and full of personality
The finished quilt measures approximately 30 1/2″ × 42 1/2″, making it a wonderful size for a kitchen wall, breakfast nook, sewing room, or cozy corner of the home
Bringing A Spoonful of Sugar to Life
This quilt was designed entirely with fabrics from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection, combining florals, plaids, and playful prints inspired by baking and storytelling
One of the things I love most about this pattern is how fabric placement changes the feel of the quilt. The collection includes both soft florals and structured plaids, allowing the blocks to feel balanced while still playful.
The pattern also includes instructions for creating either a green or pink colorway, giving quilters flexibility while keeping the overall design cohesive

A Fun Way to Practice Quilting Skills
This project is traditionally pieced and is a wonderful confident beginner quilt.
As you sew, you will practice:
- Stitch and flip techniques
- Small precision piecing
- Letter construction
- Building blocks step by step into a complete layout
The pieced “SUGAR” letters are especially fun because they allow you to work with smaller fabric sections while creating a bold focal point within the quilt.

Helpful Tips Before You Begin
A few simple preparation steps can make this quilt feel even more enjoyable to sew:
- Label your pieces carefully before beginning, especially the smaller letter sections
- Press often while assembling the lettering blocks to keep seams crisp and accurate
- Lay out your fabrics ahead of time so you can balance florals, solids, and plaids throughout the design
The pattern was designed to feel approachable and organized, helping you focus on enjoying the process.

A Quilt Filled with Warmth and Creativity
To me, this quilt captures the feeling of gathering in the kitchen, sharing stories, and creating something meaningful together.
It is a reminder that quilts do not always have to be large to feel impactful. Sometimes a smaller project can hold just as much personality and warmth.
The Spoonful of Sugar Quilt is playful, thoughtful, and full of storytelling details, making it such a special project to sew and display.
Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
