Let Your Creativity Soar with the Daydream Kite

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.

One of my favorite things about sewing is creating projects that invite imagination and play into our homes, and the Daydream Kite pattern does exactly that.

Designed using my A Spoonful of Sugar fabric collection for Riley Blake Designs, this playful quilted kite combines patchwork, storytelling prints, and soft movement in a project that feels both creative and nostalgic.

A Quilt Project with a Playful Twist

The Daydream Kite finishes at approximately 24″ × 76″ and is designed to be displayed hanging on a wall or from the ceiling

What makes this project so fun is that it blends quilting and décor together in a fresh and creative way. Instead of creating a traditional quilt, you are sewing a soft sculptural piece that brings movement and personality into a room.

The long ribbon tail and fabric bows give the kite a gentle floating feel that works beautifully in:

  • A child’s bedroom or reading nook
  • A sewing studio or creative space
  • Seasonal spring décor
  • A story-inspired playroom

Bringing A Spoonful of Sugar to Life

This project was designed using fabrics from the A Spoonful of Sugar collection, and it is such a fun way to showcase storybook prints and playful color combinations.

The kite includes:

  • Patchwork sections using small pieced units
  • Storybook prints featuring kites, florals, and neighborhood scenes
  • Soft florals mixed with plaids and coordinates
  • Decorative bows and ribbon details

I especially love how the larger prints become focal points within the kite shape while the smaller patchwork sections add texture and movement.

Helpful Sewing Tips

This is a wonderful beginner-friendly project that allows you to practice precision piecing on a smaller scale.

A few helpful tips before you begin:

  • Label and organize your pieces before sewing since the patchwork sections include many small units
  • Press seams carefully as you go to help the kite shape stay smooth and flat
  • Use a pressing cloth when fusing the interfacing to protect both your fabric and iron

The pattern also includes optional embellishment ideas like sparkle paste, embroidery floss, ribbons, and decorative trims if you want to add extra personality to your kite

A Project That Celebrates Imagination

There is something timeless about kites. They remind us to slow down, look up, and enjoy simple moments of creativity and play.

I love projects like this because they can become part of a child’s room, a seasonal display, or a handmade decoration that sparks conversation and imagination.

The Daydream Kite is a reminder that sewing can be both practical and playful, and that handmade pieces often become the ones we remember most.

Yours in storytelling creativity,
Jennifer Long
