Sewing with Heart: Supporting a Friend in Our Quilting Community

Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story.

One of the things I love most about the quilting community is the way we show up for each other. Behind every pattern and fabric collection is a person with a story, and sometimes those stories remind us how important it is to lift each other up.

Recently I purchased the Spring Rain Umbrella Quilt Block pattern from the shop of fellow Riley Blake Designs fabric designer Gracie Larson. Gracie is a talented designer and a dear friend who is currently going through treatment. I wanted to find a small way to show my love and support for her, and this sweet umbrella block felt like the perfect place to start.

You can find the pattern here:

I made the 12 inch block using fabrics from my newest Riley Blake Designs collection, A Spoonful of Sugar. The soft blues, florals, and tiny storybook prints came together beautifully in the umbrella shape. It felt meaningful to stitch something cheerful while thinking about my friend.

This block is such a lovely design. The piecing creates a charming umbrella filled with personality, and it is a wonderful project for showcasing favorite fabrics.

But this project is about something even more special. It is about community.

Quilting has always been about connection. We share patterns, fabrics, and creativity, but we also share encouragement and kindness. Supporting one another through our craft is one of the most beautiful parts of being a maker.

Gracie, I love you with my whole heart. I am praying for you and wishing you strength and peace during this time. Your creativity continues to inspire so many of us.

If you decide to make this umbrella block or any of Gracie’s patterns, please tag both of us. I would love to see your creations and share them as well.

Thank you for being part of such a caring and generous quilting community.

I can’t wait to see what you create.
Yours in crafting together,
Jennifer Long
