New Sparkler Basics- Strawberry Coin Purse

Hello to my fellow creatives! It’s Luci here from Sea Garden Sewing. I’m writing to share a new project featuring some of the newest prints in one of my favorite basics line, Melissa Mortenson‘s Sparkler! With new colors and even new patterns (little hearts, snowflakes, and stars), you’ll be sure to find the color you’re looking for.
I chose to follow the Strawberry Coin Purse pattern, written by @embercraftcompany for Suzy Quilts‘ Cutting Table digital magazine. These have been on my radar ever since their pattern release, and every new post I saw left me itching to make some of my own!
I chose to make three pouches with two different stem/leaf colors. For the color selection, left to right: Tea Rose (new), Heart Rose (new), Heart Riley Red (new), Clover, and Christmas Green (new).

I used Pellon FF77 Flex-Foam as the base instead of ByAnnie’s Soft and Stable, which seemed to be a comparable swap. If you’re fine with a flimsier pouch, you could definitely swap it out for batting scraps. When quilting with foam, it’s recommended that you size up your needle to a 90/14 or larger. I used my Juki’s Quilt Guide for Even Feed Foot to measure lines 1″ apart without needing to mark lines with a water-soluble or hera marker.

Once you attach the zipper tabs on either side, sewing it on to the quilted fabric is pretty straightforward. I’d recommend a zipper foot if you have one, but I was able to get by without one by zipping the zipper pull away from my sewing foot halfway through.

I chose to use Clover as the stem/leaves for the lighter two pouches and Christmas Green as the stem/leaves for the red pouch. My swivel snap hook clasps came in a multipack, so I used one silver, one gold, and one rose gold for variety.

Here’s the last step before opening up the zipper and sewing the front and back of the pouch together. Be careful when sewing! If you haven’t already sized up on your needle size, this is the time to do so. I had a larger needle and still broke a few needles going through multiple layers of foam and fabric.

Here are the finished pouches!

These strawberry coin purses are just like potato chips- you can’t have just one! 🙂
