Winter Frost Crochet Afghan in Chunky Thread
Hello again! It’s time once more to share a newly finished Chunky Thread project. This time I was a bit ambitious and went for a beautiful afghan pattern called Winter Frost Blanket.

It’s a fun wintry pattern, with 6 different unique block patterns, each one of each set worked in a different colorway. The result is a beautiful medley of soft colors and lots of texture.

I looked over the Chunky Thread color selection, and chose 2 shades in 5 different colors for my version. Stonewash, Morning, Linen, Pebble, Taffy, Plum, Old Lace, Blush, Raindrop, and Lagoon, with Cloud for the white. (If you want yarn requirements, 3 of each color and 4 of Cloud should be plenty.)

I found the pattern clear and easy to follow, with lots of step-by-step photos which help to see what’s going on if I’m confused.

I enjoyed how pretty and unique some of these blocks were…definitely not your traditional granny squares! I honestly couldn’t choose a favorite. Some are so pretty I’d consider doing a whole project with just them. The one change I made was to carry up my yarn whenever possible, instead of fastening off after each color change. That REALLY cuts down on the amount of ends I then need to weave in!

It took me a whole afternoon to figure out a layout. I always find random layouts so difficult! But I’m pretty happy with this one.

It’s actually a fairly small throw size, but the cotton yarn gives it a nice heaviness and drape. It’s a good size for a lapghan, or maybe a toddler bed. You could easily expand it by making more blocks of course.

As with the sugarplum afghan (same designer) I made last winter, I used the continuous braid join to join the squares, and it’s by far my favorite method! Now that I’ve wrapped my head around it, it’s so intuitive and fun.

The edging alternates front and back post crochet, which gives it a lovely nubby ridged texture; I love that it keeps it from curling AND gives a nice reversible finish to the edge.

I’m so pleased with this pretty project and enjoy having it on display after my holiday quilts and afghans are put away. We sure aren’t getting much winter this year as it has been such a mild winter in the PNW, but I can enjoy a winter frost afghan at least! 🙂

See you in the spring!
