A Farm Girl Dream: Sewing with the New Farmer’s Daughter Collection!
Hi everyone! Mary from Ember Craft Company here, sharing my latest makes with Riley Blake Designs!
The Fabrics
This month, I’m so honored to feature the fabrics from the new Farmer’s Daughter Collection by Lori Holt! You can check out the entire collection HERE. As a literal farmer’s daughter (I am actually part of the fourth generation of a farming family here in California and grew up feeding baby calves and collecting eggs!) – this collection felt even more special to me. The sweet hens and baby chicks combined with the darling florals just makes my heart so happy!

The Projects
Now, I love quilting AND sewing for my kids, and am so excited to be able to combine the two this month. The Merriweather Quilt (find it in my Etsy shop HERE!) is one of my favorite patterns I’ve ever designed! This pattern is fat quarter friendly with the most amazing sashing! And the Jasper Dress by Little Lizard King (find it HERE) is easily a family favorite with epic twirl factor. Read on for more!

The Merriweather Quilt
The Merriweather Quilt Pattern is my take on a classic cross and crown quilt block. I blew it up in size (if you’ve been around for awhile, you’ll know I love big blocks!), made it fat quarter-friendly, and added some dazzling sashing that just makes this pattern for me. Here are the fabric requirements (it does come in a yardage version as well!).

Generally, I like to mix and match fabrics in a pattern like this randomly. I like things evenly spread through out the quilt top. But after looking at the fabrics I chose, I realized I could try for a really fun, rainbow gradient with just a bit of extra planning. The great thing about this pattern is that I can prep all the elements before piecing the block and move them around to get the perfect arrangement. I’m really excited about how this turned out!

Now the sashing adds so much to the design in my humble opinion. I love the elongated red star points here with the turquoise centers. The sashing fabric is the darling Baby Chicks Background Coral print from the collection (C17187-CORAL) and it gives such a darling and subtle framing to each of the blocks.

The quilting is by my quilt bestie Donna Larson of Featherbed Quilting (find her work HERE). We chose a simple Baptist Fan pantograph to give the quilt some lovely texture and not overshadow the lovely block arrangement. It’s such a nice classic touch!

I took this darling thing out to get pictures up in the hills the other day. Unfortunately, the wind got the best of us and we ended up having to get a couple full shots in our backyard instead. Not nearly as picturesque, but at least you can see the whole thing! I have to say, I’m moderately obsessed with this version and can’t wait to hear what you all think!

The Jasper Dress
Now, the Jasper dress is a pattern we’ve made a couple of times before. It has a darling flutter sleeve option that I love and two skirt choices. It’s designed by Little Lizard King (find their patterns HERE), one of my favorite pattern companies to use for outfits for the kids. My girl loves twirly dresses, so we went for the circle skirt option. Emma chose the Plaid in Tea Rose from the collection (find it HERE), which kind of surprised me considering all the florals in the collection she usually goes for. I had a little bit of the Bouquet in Raindrop print leftover from the cornerstones of the quilt (find it HERE) and used that as a fun accent on the flutter sleeves and a little bow for her hair.

Now, I generally don’t try to match her outfits to my quilts, but I could hardly pass up the opportunity to get pictures of them both together. Be still my heart! Seeing her wrapped up in my quilt to head over to the park is just the cutest thing (and it was a bit chilly, so perfect to have the it with us!). I may have to coordinate outfits and quilts more often!

If you’ve made it this far, I’d love to thank you by offering 25% off my Merriweather Quilt pattern through the end of January (click HERE to be taken straight to it) and use the code FARMER25 at check out. I’d love to see more versions out in the world and can’t wait to see what you make with it!
