Olive Grove + Hexy Love = A Match Made in Quilty Heaven

Charlie Bear Quilts
Quilt Pattern Designer, Karlyn Leslie
There are some fabric collections that instantly speak to your creative heart, and Olive Grove by Amber Elliot is one of them. Inspired by the serene beauty of olive orchards and mills, this collection celebrates rustic charm with earthy tones, delicate olive branches, and soft, timeless prints.

The moment I saw it, I knew exactly where it belonged: in a Hexy Love quilt.
The combination of floral, geometric and a low volume cursive print create this earthy colour palette that creates a balanced, scrap-happy vibe.

What I love most about this pairing is how it celebrates contrast:
- Soft, natural prints alongside structured geometric lines
- Rustic textures meeting modern design
- Calm neutrals playing against bold pops of pattern

Let’s Make HRTs!
The Hexy Love Quilt comes together in columns, with HRTs flanking each side of the Heart Unit. To make the correct number of left and right facing Half Rectangle Triangles in the right colour combinations, follow the HRT Chart in the Hexy Love pattern.

In this example, I am using Fabric B + F. When I consult the chart, I know I need to make (1) Left HRT and (1) Right HRT. This means I need (2) prints of each.

Note: The diagonal line is always drawn from the opposite corner of the way you want the HRT to face. For left-facing, the line is drawn from the right corner. For right-facing, the line is drawn from the left corner.
Next, with RST, align the drawn lines with the corners of the top and bottom rectangle. (It will only work one way, so you can never be wrong!)

Trimming Your HRT With the Split Rects Ruler
This ruler takes all the guess work out of trimming your HRTs, so I highly recommend investing in this time-saving tool! The Split Rects Ruler makes sure your corners are offset by an accurate 1/8″.
Start by lining the seam up with the diagonal line on the ruler. Since the HRTs need to be trimmed to 3″ x 5 1/2″, make sure the bottom of the HRT lines up with the 3″ line, trimming off the top and right side.

As you can see, not much needs to come off the top. Below you can see how the ruler accounts for a 1/8″ corner for perfect points when your hexies are sewn together.

The other end of the HRT should line up with the 5 1/2″ line, also allowing for an offset corner of 1/8″.

Now flip the HRT around so the green is now on top to trim the other side.

If you do not have the Split Rects Ruler, the pattern includes a picture to help you trim up your HRTs with a regular ruler.
Repeat the HRT process to complete the correct number of left and right facing HRT in the appropriate fabric combinations as per your HRT chart.

Depending on the size you are making, you will need some partial Heart Top Units and Heart Bottom Units.

Now Put it All Together

The Hexy Love pattern features 3 sizes: Baby (48″ x 50 1/2″), Throw (63″ x 65 1/2″) and Twin (70 1/2″ x 90 1/2″).
