The Sabine Crossing Quilt
The Sabine Crossing Quilt was first introduced as a mystery quilt project within the Seasoned Makers Community. Designed to be stitched one block at a time, this project guided quilters through a series of six distinct quilt blocks, allowing their skills to develop organically while the final design remained a surprise.
With each reveal, members eagerly pieced their blocks together, creating a beautiful sampler quilt that celebrates classic quilting techniques.
Now available as a full quilt pattern, Sabine Crossing offers three sizes—Baby, Crib, and Lap—making it a perfect project for confident beginners and seasoned quilters alike. The quilt’s structured design ensures that you can personalize the layout while refining fundamental quilting methods such as the Square-in-a-Square and HSTs 4-at-a-Time techniques.
Whether you participated in the original mystery quilt event or are discovering Sabine Crossing for the first time, this pattern invites you to embark on a rewarding quilting journey filled with creativity, skill-building, and connection.

The Inspiration
This quilt is reminiscent of my childhood and our family’s travels to visit relatives in Louisiana. A few times a year my parents would load us into the station wagon and we would travel from Houston to Lake Charles or Baton Rouge. We’re talking vinyl seats and no air conditioning in the car either!
But part of that trip meant we had to cross the Sabine River which divides Texas and Louisiana. As we got to the middle of the bridge, my dad would always hang his hand out of the window and wave goodbye to Texas as we reached the center of the bridge.
Because of this, I designed the Sabine Crossing Quilt to remind me of my dad – hopefully it will stir up fond family memories of your childhood, as well.

Fabric Choices
For my quilt, I used fabrics from a Riley Blake Designs fabric collection called Floret by Gerri Robinson.
These fabrics with their soothing colors were a perfect blend for this quilt. Inside the Seasoned Makers Community our mystery quilters used a variety of colors and put together some of the most amazing quilts you could ever imagine. Note: On the Shop listing I show a bold color collection from the Riley Blake Confetti Cotton collection.

What Makes Sabine Crossing Unique
The Sabine Crossing Quilt stands out as a skill-building sampler quilt that blends classic quilt blocks with modern construction techniques.
Originally introduced as a mystery quilt within the Seasoned Makers Community, it was designed to be pieced together one block at a time, keeping quilters engaged while allowing them to refine their skills with each block.

About the Sabine Crossing Quilt
1. Mystery Quilt Origins – The quilt originally released a new block each month, making it an exciting surprise for participants as they worked through six different block designs without knowing the final layout.
2. Skill Development Focus – With its structured yet approachable block-based design, this quilt challenges quilters to master classic techniques like the Square-in-a-Square method and the Half Square Triangles 4-at-a-Time. It’s a perfect project for quilters looking to level up their precision and accuracy while creating a visually striking quilt.
3. Customizable Layout & Sizes – Unlike traditional patterns that follow a strict format, Sabine Crossing allows for creative flexibility. Quilters can choose from three different sizes—Baby (45” x 45”), Crib (49” x 49”), and Lap (55” x 55”)—and add or omit borders to tailor the final look, AND rearrange most of the blocks to suit your taste.
4. Sampler-Style Blocks with a Unified Design – Many sampler quilts feature a mix of blocks that don’t always flow together cohesively. Sabine Crossing takes a different approach, ensuring that each block builds upon the previous ones, creating a balanced and harmonious design.
5. Community Connection & Shared Experience – This quilt was first stitched as a group project, bringing quilters together inside the Seasoned Makers Community. It fostered camaraderie, creativity, and shared learning, making it more than just a pattern, but a testament to the joy of quilting with others.
6. Perfect for Confident Beginners – While it introduces a variety of techniques, Sabine Crossing is designed to be approachable, making it an excellent learning quilt for those wanting to practice new skills without feeling overwhelmed.
