River Log Cabin Quilt with Lori Holt’s Gentler Times Fabric Collection

Lori Holt’s new fabric collection, Gentler Times, is filled with beautiful, easy to mix-and-match prints in a variety of colors that are easy to incorporate into any project because of their small scaled nature. The prints can easily be the focal feature of project because of their deep saturated color, or be a coordinating accent.

This collection also contains several low volume background prints that can be used to add subtle complexity to a quilt. Lately I have been loving using low volume prints as background because they add interest to a part of the quilt block that I wouldn’t normally pay too much attention to.

So, to show off the colorful array of small prints and the variety of low volume background fabrics in this collection, I made the River Log Cabin by Amy Ellis. This pattern uses 2.5 inch and 1.5 inch strips, perfect for small scaled prints, and creates an illusion of circles. It’s such a clever pattern and a fun twist on the original log cabin block.

For my quilt I chose my favorite prints and arranged them in a scrappy order. My only rule was no two of the same colors should touch. For the background, I used most of the low volume prints.

I used Lori Holt’s basic Lula Tea Rose from the Bee Vintage collection for the backing and added a stripe of one of the teal fabrics for a fun contrast. Even though the Lula Tea Rose print is not the exact shade of pink color in the collection, it blends so well that I used the leftovers for my binding too!

The deep colors and scrappy vibe of this quilt, it gives a “lived in” feeling as if I have been using it for years. The fabrics in the collection are comforting and nostalgic and I that’s what I think about when I see this quilt. It’s feels homey and familiar, even though it’s brand new.

I can’t wait to see how you use this collection!

Happy sewing,
Zaineb

Wow, very busy and a difficult to stitch pattern. But it’s so well coreographed with a simple back.
The wavy quilting stands out quite well on the back side. Love it!
