A Quilt Pattern Perfect for Directional Prints? Check out the Road Trippin’ Quilt in the New Hey Pumpkin Fabrics!

Hi everyone! Mary Burroughs-Mayer checking back in from Ember Craft Company with my latest quilt project!

The Pattern

I’m super excited to share one of my favorite patterns I’ve designed: The Road Trippin’ Quilt! You can find it in my Etsy shop HERE. This pattern was born out of getting a bundle of beautiful, directional prints. Now, I’m one of those people who has trouble with their food touching, let alone fabrics going every which way, so figuring out a way to get my fabrics facing the right direction with only a limited amount of effort was a huge win for me. This pattern is built from a classic block, blown up in size and made fat quarter-friendly. I love the scrappy look you get when mixing and matching all the prints!

The Fabrics

I recently got my hands on the new Hey Pumpkin Collection by My Minds Eye, you can find the link to the collection HERE. This is such a sweet Halloween collection made of oranges and blacks, but also the sweetest pinks. There are skeletons and ghosts and of course, pumpkins. I have been seeing the cutest quilts pop up in this collection, a few of my favorites are this Boo Quilt by Remi Vail Studio (find it HERE), this Carnival Quilt by JOYstitched (find this one HERE), and this Candy Grab Quilt by Sea Garden Sewing (find that one HERE).

One of my favorite parts of this collection, though, just might be the Mr. Bones Jr. Panel. My kids have been obsessed with Halloween since it passed last year, and they both have skeleton decorations still hanging in their rooms. The Mr. Bones Jr. panel makes a rather large stuffy skeleton that will be the perfect touch to our Halloween decor this fall!

The Blocks

This collection does have a few directional prints in it, and it feels like the perfect way to show off my Road Trippin’ pattern. Check out my post on Instagram HERE to see me assemble this quilt block with directional fabrics! One adjustment I made to the pattern was to use two different background fabrics for the blocks – I substituted the Stars White fabric for Piece D in the pattern – this requires about a yard for the throw size, and used Riley Blake Confetti Cottons in Vintage White for the remainder of the background. I love how this minor change really sets of the center of the block!

My favorite print in this collection just might be the Main Charcoal print. This one has a little bit of everything from the collection, so I decided to use it for the sashing to frame out the entire project! Now, this print is also directional, so it is necessary

to tweak the cutting a little bit to make sure all those skeletons are facing the same way!

The Quilting

Donna Larson from Featherbed Quilting (find her work on Instagram HERE) quilted this one for me. She suggested this gorgeous Flower Webs Panto by Sew Shabby Quilting – you can find it HERE. I adore the mix of webs and blooms in the stitching and it adds a fantastic texture!

Mr. Bones Jr. Panel

The Mr. Bones Jr. Panel is actually really fun to put together. He has a dowel for stabilization in the trunk and head unit, so you don’t need to worry about him flopping over. This project does require a lot more stuffing than I would have thought (stuffed things always do for me!), and each piece does need to be handstitched closed once it’s stuffed. Hand stitching things is not necessarily my favorite, but sometimes the forced slowdown is needed and necessary. This guy turned out amazing, and the kids love him! The only problem is my children are asking me to make another one so they can each have their own Mr. Bones…

I feel like it’s never too early to begin your holiday sewing! I’ve got a big head start on Halloween with these two projects. I can’t wait to see more quilts pop up as this spooky and sweet collection hits the stores!

Let’s keep in touch:

Happy Sewing!
