Sparkler Basics Hexie Flowers

Hey, hey! It’s Sarah of Sarah Jean Makes and I am so excited to share my recent make with you! Riley Blake Designs makes a LOT of beautiful basics, and it’s so hard to choose which I like the best. I had the opportunity to work with the Sparkler collection, a vibrant blender with a hint of sparkle, and I may be inclined to say it is my favorite!

I pulled a rainbow color palette to play with, including colors Cayenne, Pumpkin, Beehive, Riley Green, Bear Lake, and Orchid. They’re the perfect classic rainbow! I paired the colors with the White and Black colors to give some contrast.I typically don’t branch out too often when it comes to creating. I’m a standard machine piecing kind of gal. But every once in a while, I enjoy dipping my toes into the English Paper Piecing (EPP) side of the quiltiverse. I used one inch hexagon papers to make a simple hexie flower. I varied the center of the flower with either white or black.

Once complete, I used a blanket stitch on my sewing machine to applique the blocks down to a seven and a half in square, white background for the hexies with a black center and black background for white center. I was lucky enough to have coordinating thread for each color on hand (I swear that NEVER happens!). Once the hexies were attached, I sewed the blocks together in a checkerboard style and quilted it with a simple echo stitch along the seam lines using contrasting color. I added some folded triangles to the back top of the quilt before binding and sewed them in to create a little hanging sleeve. I inserted a thing dowel cut down to the size of the piece and voila! A mini quilt to hang!

Thank you so much for following along with my recent creation! If you’d like to see more of what I do, please check out my website at www.sarahjeanmakes.com or follow me on Instagram @SarahJeanMakes.
