A “Patchwork” Patchworked Shower Curtain

Hey, hey! It’s Sarah of Sarah Jean Makes and I am so thrilled to share with you a new favorite project of mine! I had the privilege of being able to work with the new collection from Liza Taylor. I instantly fell in love with the quilty references in the prints: the subtle nod to Foundation Paper Piecing in the main print, the tiny sawtooth stars, the checkerboard patchwork. It all is so cute!

I wanted to use this collection for a project that I would keep within my home, something to decorate my space and bring a smile to my face each time I see it. This is a tricky feat, because as any sewist would know, our homes are already COVERED in all of our creations. It’s hard to find a new space to fill!

We moved into our new home a couple of years ago and have been slowly decorating as we like. One of the neglected areas has been the kid’s bathroom (also the guest bathroom). It’s an unfortunate layout of our home, where the first thing you see when you walk in the front door is the bathroom. It’s strange, but it’s what we have to work with. I had previously purchased a cute rainbow shower curtain, but it never quite worked for the vision I had in mind. I had dreams of making a patchworked shower curtain, and when I saw this collection it felt like it was waiting for this project.

I am a quilter at heart and don’t have the standard machine (e.g. Serger) to finish seams as a garment maker would. So this posed a challenge for me as I approached construction. I opted to use French seams for finishing the seams, which is where you sew the seams two times: once wrong sides together, then right sides together, to incapsulate the seam. This way, the “quilt top” that I was creating would be durable and be able to withstand washing in the washing machine. If I had used standard seams without serging or overlocking the stitches, it would quickly unravel. I was able to double roll the hem and edges of the curtain to lock in the edge seams, and I created a facing style edge at the top. I added in button holes for my curtain hooks and it hung just perfectly!

I am so happy with this project and I love how the cute motif’s of the Patchwork collection show my love of quilting in this space.
