Hi there! I’m Vickeidy of Sewspicious, and I’m back with another sampler quilt for my Make it Modern post.

This time, I’m sharing the Solstice Sampler, a free annual sew-along hosted by Amber Elliot of Alderwood Studio. It’s one of my favorite community quilting events of the year. Keep reading to learn more about it!

What is the Solstice Sampler?

The Solstice Sampler 2025 is a free sew-along event organized by Alderwood Studio, running from October 12 to December 14, 2025. Throughout the event, participants create a quilt made up of nine unique blocks, with one new block pattern released each week.

All of the block patterns are delivered straight to your inbox.

My Block Design

For this year’s sampler, I designed the Solstice Bloom block, and it’s my favorite block I’ve created for a sampler so far.

The Solstice Bloom block is a great way to practice sewing curves. The curves are a bit tight, so it’s a little challenging, but that’s the fun of joining a sampler. It gives you the chance to try new skills in small, manageable steps.

Plus, joining a sampler it’s a low-pressure, community-driven way to experiment with color, piecing, and fabric choices while connecting with other quilters along the way.

Cover Quilt Details

For our Solstice Sampler quilt, we went with a soft, natural color palette that feels fresh and easy to work with. We used Confetti Cotton Solids in colors: Sand Dollar, Papaya, Grapefruit, Curry, Lettuce, Sage, Lodgepole, and Peaches n’ Cream for the background.

The mix of warm oranges, greens, and neutrals gives the quilt a relaxed, modern look that works perfectly for this sampler.
