Stitching the Southwest

A new quilt-along with Ingrid from Joe June and Mae, Riley-Blake-Designs and Bernina.

I’m thrilled to finally share my Southwest Trails Quilt pattern with you, and invite you to the ‘Stitching-the-Southwest-Quilt-Along with Bernina and Riley-Blake-Designs.

This quilt pattern is a design that I wanted to do for years and one that began quite unexpectedly… on the couch!

Back in 2024, I was completely hooked on the Yellowstone-Tv series. Every day (yes I was that hooked) I’d sink into the dramatic landscapes, the rugged textures, and those endless golden plains framed by the big Montana sky.

Somewhere between the open trails, the earthy tones, and the handwoven blankets draped across every cabin chair, the design for this quilt took shape. I wanted to capture that feeling, when Beth Dutton steps out on the front porch…wrapped in a quilt!

That’s how Southwest Trails Quilt pattern was born.

This quilt is journey through the open landscapes, light, and texture. Each motif represents a piece of the land, the trails that cross the hills, the rhythm of woven patterns, the jagged outlines of distant mountains, and the soft flow of the horizon. It’s a blend of tradition and modern geometry, inspired by nature, campfires and guitar music.

For the fabrics, I couldn’t have imagined a better match than Riley Blake Designs Basic Collections.

Their beautiful basic collections, Sparkler, Dapple Dot and Confetti Cottons have the perfect tones, everything from soft clay reds and weathered turquoise to sandy neutrals. Together, they echo the earthy color palette with a little twist, that I had in mind.

I had so much fun pulling combinations that felt classic with a spin, but still natural, with the kind of depth that makes a quilt feel like it’s telling a story.

As I began designing, I knew, I needed every motif that echoed the open wide landscape. Anything that carried the feeling of horses, cattle, country music, campfire combined with lightness and tradition. I played a lot with placement and color transitions. I think I managed to capture that essence, what do you think?
