Create the Beyond the Horizon Quilt: A Peaceful Journey in Fabric
Hello friends! This is Jennifer Long from Sew A Story. As a quilt and doll pattern designer, one of my favorite things about quilting is the way a design can reflect a feeling. The Beyond the Horizon quilt does exactly that. It is a gentle, flowing pattern that invites you to take your time and enjoy the process.
This quilt is traditionally pieced using strip sets and simple cutting methods. It may look complex, but it is a beginner friendly project that builds gradually and leaves you with a quilt that feels calm and balanced.
The finished quilt measures 72″ × 74″, which makes it perfect for a throw, wall display, or special gift.

What Makes This Quilt Meaningful
The Beyond the Horizon quilt was designed to capture the feeling of looking out toward something bigger. The idea that there is peace and possibility just beyond view. The design uses a simple wave like technique that adds movement and rhythm to your piecing.
Instead of using blocks, this quilt comes together in horizontal rows that transition gently between colors. You can use a strip roll for a soft ombré effect or mix your scraps to create something more playful. Either way, it is a chance to experiment with color and enjoy the meditative pace of strip piecing.

You’ll be working with:
- (36) 2 ½” strips (or 1/8 yard cuts)
- 2 ¼ yards of a teal sky fabric
- 2 ¼ yards of a yellow ground fabric
- 5 ¼ yards for backing
- ⅝ yard for binding
The original was sewn using prints from my Created With Love fabric collection, which blends florals, texture, and color in a way that supports the message of hope stitched into this pattern.

Designed to Help You Slow Down
This project uses a version of the Bargello technique, but it is intentionally simplified. You will sew long strips, create a looped tube, make a few gentle cuts, and then lay it all out row by row. No rushing, no complicated math. Just a rhythm you can return to as you work.
Whether you are stitching this quilt for someone special or using it as a quiet retreat at the end of the day, I hope it gives you a sense of purpose and peace. I love seeing how the colors blend into each other and how each row leads you gently into the next.
