Sampler Quilt with Baby Boy Fabric Collection
Hello makers, it’s Sara from Rose Hill Quilts!
This week I’ve been working with the Baby Boy collection by Riley Blake Designs and I couldn’t resist sharing my latest project. My initial plan was to make an offset medallion quilt—if you’ve been here before, you’ll know I’m always drawn to a medallion layout!
But as soon as I started cutting into the panel, the plan changed.
From Medallion to Sampler
The panel in this line is packed with adorable little illustrations, and I really wanted to fussy cut as many of them as possible. Chopping up panels is one of my favourite things to do in quilting—it feels like a puzzle where you get to highlight the sweetest details.
So instead of building a medallion, I shifted gears and went with a sampler style quilt. That way, I could showcase each of those darling animals and motifs in their own little block.

Traditional Blocks with a Twist
To tie everything together, I used a mix of classic quilt blocks:
- Economy blocks (perfect for framing those fussy cuts)
- Lozenges
- Sawtooth stars
- Plenty of flying geese
I love how the traditional blocks balance the playful panel prints.
A Fresh Take on Baby Colours
One of the things I really love about Baby Boy is that it steps away from the traditional soft pastels you often see in baby collections. Instead, it leans into contrasting navy blues and gorgeous fresh greens. The result feels modern and versatile, and I think it’s perfect for a baby quilt that will be treasured as the little one grows.
Using a Design Wall
This quilt really showed me the value of a design wall. With so many different blocks and fussy-cut elements, it was so helpful to lay everything out and see how the colours and motifs played together. Moving blocks around on the wall made it easy to find balance without having to unpick or re-stitch. It’s one of those tools that feels simple but makes the whole process more enjoyable and a lot less stressful.

Quilting and Finishing
I quilted this project in my longarm, using Vlieseline 80/20 wadding, which is one of my favourites for baby quilts. It has the perfect balance of softness and durability, and it washes beautifully too.

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a fresh baby quilt idea, I’d definitely recommend playing around with Baby Boy by Riley Blake Designs. It’s a collection that sparks creativity in the best way – tag me on instagram if you work with this panel.
