New Box of Crayons Square Up Baby Quilt

The New Box of Crayons fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs is so bright, cheerful, and fun, it’s hard to resist being immediately inspired to create with it!

There are endless ways to use this fabric collection, and I wanted to make something quick-ish to start seeing all the vibrant colors come to life. For my project, I created a shortened version of Fat Quarter Shop’s free Square Up quilt pattern. It’s an easy, beginner pattern that highlights the colorful fabrics and allows for meditative sewing—no need to think too much about fabric placement.

For this baby quilt, I used the 9 kaleidoscope prints and the New Box of Crayons Confetti Cloud print for the background. The Confetti Cloud print is so darling. It has little stars, suns, squiggles and other tiny motifs and is perfect for adding a little dash of happiness to any project.

For the backing of the quilt, I pieced together wide stripes of the kaleidoscope print in rainbow order. I feel a pieced backing is special surprise for any quilt.

The quilting was done with a walking foot and I did the “stitch-in-the-ditch” technique to keep with the meditative theme of sewing 🙂 For this technique, I lengthened my stitch length to the maximum (on my machine it is 5.0 mm).

I did a flanged binding with two of my favorite kaledioscope colors, yellow and sky. It was my first attempt at flanged binding and I am really happy with how it turned out. One thing to keep in mind if you usually sew binding to the front and then hand sew or machine sew binding to the back is that with flanged binding you sew the binding to the back of the quilting and pull it forward onto the top of the quilt.

I also added a Sarah Heart “Washable, Made to be Loved” label on the back of the quilt. I feel adding this label adds a touch of professionalism to the quilt.

Making this quilt was such a joy. I hope you feel inspired to create with New Box of Crayons.

Happy sewing,

Zaineb

Wow Zaineb! You’ve outdone yourself once again. I enjoyed your post and felt like the project was piecing together as I read. I love how you say “quick-ish.” Of course your time and dedication to all your projects is not quick. It brings out how humble you are! I’m always looking forward to your future masterpieces!
