Background Players, Big Impact: How to Sell More Batiks
In the world of quilting, not every star of the show is covered in florals or pops of color. Sometimes, the most important fabric in the quilt is the one that fades into the background—and background batiks are one of the most overlooked sales opportunities in your shop.
Why? Because most quilters need them—and they usually buy several yards at a time. That’s a big-ticket moment hiding in plain sight.
Here’s how to merchandise, market, and make the most of your background batik inventory:
1. Make them easy to find and even easier to choose
Don’t bury your batiks. Create a dedicated section or endcap labeled “Background Batiks” or “Perfect Backgrounds.” Use signage to guide shoppers, especially those who are newer or overwhelmed by choice.
Group them by tone—light neutrals, grays, soft pastels, low-volume prints—to make comparing easier. And don’t forget swatches or mini quilts nearby that show how the fabric looks when it’s not just on the bolt.
2. Pair them with patterns and projects
Nothing sells a background fabric faster than seeing it in action. Create kits or displays where the background batik is clearly labeled and used intentionally—especially if the project requires 2+ yards.
You can also build sample stacks with:
- A bold batik focal fabric
- Coordinating prints
- One strong background batik as the anchor
Don’t forget: when customers can see the full story, they’re far more likely to buy all the pieces.
3. Highlight yardage-based purchases
Unlike fat quarters or smaller cuts, backgrounds require a bigger investment. That means your margin gets a little more breathing room—but only if customers know how much they’ll need.
Add simple signage like:
- “Need a background? Most throw-size quilts need 2.5–3 yards.”
- “This batik is a customer favorite for modern backgrounds.”
- “Pairs beautifully with bright or tonal batiks—ask us for project ideas!”
A little education goes a long way in nudging someone toward a larger purchase than they were already planning to make.
4. Feature them in BOMs and subscriptions
If you’re running a Block of the Month or subscription quilt program, consider including a background batik as the unifying element across the quilt. It keeps things visually cohesive—and gives customers confidence in choosing a background that’s already approved.
Even better? Offer alternate background options so customers can personalize. Just make sure to merchandise those choices in-store and online to maximize exposure.
Background batiks may be subtle, but they’re a sales powerhouse when you give them the spotlight they deserve. By organizing, pairing, and positioning them as must-haves, you’ll not only increase sales—but also make shopping easier for your customers.
Take a walk through your shop this week and ask: Would someone know where to find a background batik in here? If the answer isn’t obvious, you’ve just found your next big opportunity.

In many of the shops I visit, batiks are quietly doing a lot of the heavy lifting—especially as background fabrics. They’re versatile, forgiving, and often the biggest yardage in a single quilt. The trick is treating them not just as a supporting role, but as a feature. When shop owners give background batiks their own space, pair them with patterns or kits, or even just label them as ‘go-to backgrounds,’ sales go up. It’s less about pushing product and more about helping the customer visualize their quilt coming together. That’s where the magic happens!
