Make it Modern – Smashing Petals Quilt

There’s something so energizing about working with solids! Especially when they’re as vibrant and buttery-soft as Confetti Cottons. When planning out this version of my new quilt pattern, Smashing Petals, I leaned into bold color play and clean, graphic shapes to create a quilt that feels like a freshly planted flower bed that is orderly in structure, yet full of organic personality.

Hey there, Kelly Renay here! I’m so excited to share this playful spin on Smashing Petals, a pattern built around a bold, modern flower made from four oversized petals and a vibrant center. Each flower block blossoms with its own color story thanks to the mix-and-match layout included in the pattern. Think of it like a curated garden where every bloom gets to shine. The result? A quilt that feels dynamic and alive, full of movement and charm from corner to corner.

A Blooming Palette of Confetti Cottons

Every fabric in this quilt comes from Riley Blake Designs’ Confetti Cottons, a premium line of solids I love for their buttery-soft feel, vibrant color, and smooth sew-ability. The background features a cool blend of Sweet Mint and Poseidon, giving the quilt a refreshing base that allows the flowers to shine.

For the petals, I chose a radiant mix of pinks: Rouge, Peony, Sugar Pink, Riley Coral, Lipstick, Piglet Pink, Riley Hot Pink, and Riley Raspberry. Each one brings a different tone to the petals; some soft, some bold, all beautiful.

The centers radiate warmth with shades like Butterscotch, Tangerine, Daffodil, Cheddar, Riley Mustard, Ochre, and Riley Orange.

As I planned the palette, I realized it loosely follows a triadic color scheme using the new Riley Blake Designs Quilty Color Wheel pulling from yellow-orange, pink (as a red-violet hue), and mint (a cool twist on blue-green). It’s not a perfect triangle, but it plays by the same rules: high contrast, vibrant energy, and visual balance. I love when color theory gives structure, but leaves space to follow your intuition, too.

Petal-Powered Layout + Beginner-Friendly Construction

The on-point layout gives the quilt its dynamic movement, allowing each block to spin and shine. The finished quilt measures 68″ x 68″, a versatile size that works beautifully as a throw or statement piece.

And while it might look intricate, this pattern is designed for confident beginners. It uses the stitch and flip method to create the curved petal shapes, but no curved piecing required! It’s a fun and approachable way to make something bold and striking, even if you’re newer to quilting.
